The simple fact is that the job does not warrant $15/hour. Since it does not, McD's will simply innovate that much faster and eliminate even more employees quicker through automation because raising pay that much makes it less expensive to automate. in comparison.
Do away with income tax. Problem solved. Minimum wage goes farther of the government would stop taking their money. Why force employers to pay out more, when the government could just take less? Everyone would win, not just minimum wage employees.
Federal income tax is 10% at the lowest bracket and that's on top of any state income tax. Throw in paying for Medicare and social security regardless of whether or not you use it.
i understand about the low wages but they just need to accept it and live accordingly. live with family, share expenses, carpool, use public transportation, get a 2nd job, etc. they can't expect their employer to make sure they have a decent life.
In Canada, our minimum wage is near $11. And keep in mind the Canadian dollar has dropped badly. $15 would be a LOT in Canadian dollars. McDonalds is not a PERMANENT career, it's a JOB. it's temporary.

It's stupid minimum wage is NOT supposed to be wages you can live solely off of. They are just jobs meant for younger people to get a foot in the door and have experience in the work force.
The thing is, its not just high schoolers who work at minimum wage jobs. I think the majority of those on the picket lines are older individuals who are trying to make a living. If you have a job that pays you a living wage, you are set. If you have benefits, you are set, but what of those in situations where they have to work these jobs to try and support themselves or their families? For them, these jobs are a matter of life and death. If we had slowly and steadily increased minimum wage over the years, there wouldn't be such a horrendous gap between the cost of living and minimum wage.
If you work at a place long enough you get raises and promotions. If they are still at minimum wage constantly then they are either job hopping or are really crappy employees.
The government needs to fuck off with its bullshit taxes and corruption, then the cost of living will go down and you won't need 15$/hr wage to survive.

The reason is that if we start paying unskilled labor as much as skilled labor, people aren't going to fill the skilled labor jobs. What we need are more mid level jobs that require real skills, not to pay people more to deep fry potatoes.
We can all live easily without McDonalds (we would live longer and healthier too). We would all be dead in a week without EMTs.

Probably (read: definitely) true, but its not so much about just McDonald's, but all minimum wage jobs. McDonald's has just been one of the most vocal on the issue.
Nobody cares about McDonalds. Give the people who deserve more than minimum wage increased pay. Like the waste management people who smell like garbage after they get home or the janitors who smell horrible when they get home. Those people deserve better than minimum wage. But some highschool dropout who works at McDonalds is the least of my concerns.
It doesn't matter what profession someone works in, everyone deserves the right to make a living wage. You can argue someone deserve to make more than others but anything under $15/hr is just not right
In the real world, laboratory research assistants can make less than $15. But then, those may be picked up by students at universities. Sometimes, it's good to have parents who can pay all or some of your tuition fees, because you don't have to work as much.
What is "living wage" supposed to mean? Enough to live off of? In that case, the living wage is probably $2,000 a year.

You have no understanding of what a living wage is especially if you think its $2,000 a year. A living wage means what is required for you to support yourself and/or your family with the minimum standard of living (we're not talking cable tv and a car, we're talking discount bread and riding the bus). A living wage includes food, housing, childcare, medical care, transportation, and other misc. expenses. For a studio apartment where there isn't even a dedicated bedroom, we're talking where I live $10,600 a year alone, so how the hell you think someone can live on 2 grand a year is ridiculous. In my area, a living wage is calculated to be at minimum ~$11/hr for an individual working full time or two jobs equaling full time status.
In the most literal sense, a living wage is enough to subsist on--I. e. to survive and survive only on. In that case, all you'd need is a tent, fresh water, and the most caloric dense food. It wouldn't be comfortable, but that's not what "living wage" in its most basic sense is.
What you're referring to would better be called a comfort wage.
How the fuck do you dare compare a skilled job such as a construction worker to some mutt flipping burgers and serving fries? Get a fucking college degree and quit bitching...

But someone does need to work these jobs to provide the supply for the demand.
That's the point.
@Mesonfielde Exactly young people. Those that are in high school and college.

... i think its a slap in the face for those that actually care for people's health.

Hail Satan!!!
Virtually anyone who shows up on time and has a good attitude stays at the minimum wage very long...
Generally, it's 16 year olds who live at home earning the minimum wage, not 35 year olds.

Alas, family matters.
We should also increase the wage of those that serve the military.
No i think people should be poor and i hate prosperity. That's what patriotism is. Fuck the foreigners to death, trump 2016
The bigger picture is what if the US dollar was no longer the world's currency?
nope minimum wage should be abolished. mcdonalds workers might not even be worth paying minimum wage to be honest.
Why not just implement a income increase based on age? It works pretty decently in Australia.
I've never heard of that. Do explain...
They have a bracket system. In which depending on which age bracket you are in depends on the minimum amount they are allowed to pay you.
Interesting. You learn something new everyday.

She isn't doing that at all. She plainly says that. Do you have a college degree? Because you don't seem to read too well...
Yeah that's why you see so many of Ronald McDonalds daughter's working there that explains why so many of the employees where too much make up.
Well McDonald's and jobs like that were not meant to be supporting a whole family, more like for a student.
