It really depends on your people skills, and the particular bank.
I used to be a bank teller, and yeah; most banks do require referrals. Depending on the bank, and what they consider to be a referral, that can be either very easy, or quite difficult.
Some banks consider a referral to be anything that "furthers the relationship between a customer and the bank." That can be nearly anything. If there is a customer that regularly deposits their check, then getting them to sign up for direct deposit can be one referral. If a customer doesn't have a debit card, then getting them to start using one can be another referral. Those are easy.
Other banks (like the one I worked at) only considered new accounts to be referrals. Getting someone to open a savings account, a loan, a line of credit, or another checking account, etc. Those were quite a bit more complicated to obtain than just getting someone to start using direct deposit. When all of the tellers have to do that, it can get kind of competetive, too.
So, like I said; a lot of it depends on the individual bank.
