How important is your schools piece of paper?

I just got my grade 12. Yep... No college or University hell I did not even go to my graduation. As soon as I got my grade 12 I fucked off to work with all the men and women who build this country. Started off as a grunt doing bitch work then a welders helper and then made it to actually welding on the pipeline. Enjoying 6 figures every year, do I have a piece of paper nope... I have a reputation though in being what I'm good at.

So how is your piece of high priced paper making you money from these great college or Universities? I mean you went to these expensive schools to get an education right and then get a job in that field right or did you just trade it for a job at the local TGI Friday's?

Since I’m an elementary school teacher, having that education is important. I’m constantly applying concepts I learned in university, on a daily basis. But I will say that I have learned so much more from on the job experience. At this point in my career, it’s definitely still a labour of love a lot of the time, but since obtaining a permanent position, my salary has increased. My loans are paid and have been paid off for over 3 years now. My husband is also a teacher, and we’re not expecting to become rich with this career - we just want to live comfortably and within our means. If people only went into teaching for the money (as a lot of people where I live seem to love saying), there would be almost NO teachers, at any level.

In addition to all that, however, so much of this career is about who you know, your reputation as a teacher, and your relationships with students and their families, rather than concrete academic knowledge. I feel like that is true for most career paths for anyone ranging from high school dropouts to lawyers and doctors. Reputation and connections get you farther than an education ever can, really. Education is only a springboard, and not one that everyone needs.

My mother is a French (France) teacher but her love is not for the money, it's for teaching kids a new language. I should know... I remember the nice summer days where she would force me to sit on the couch with her and do a little French home work even though there was no homework. I tell you it was torture when you could hear all the kids outside playing road hockey when you are 11 years old. I would have to recite French vowel's and read certain phrases in French with my mother stopping me at every word that I pronounced wrong with her sounding each vowel in the word and making sure I pronounced the word right. I had to do 5 pages everyday. I would ask mom if I could go out and play and her reply was not until we do our French home work. Even going back to old pages making sure I did not loose the reading and pronunciation. Even to this day I speak fluent in French and English. Having a French mother allowed me to get my EU citizenship and I am currently working at I. T. E. R. welding the cryogenics piping to the Super conducting Toroidal field coils. I'm not even from France I was born and raised in Canada. Even applying they wanted all the copies of all my welding tickets, journey man letter, employers and reference's even a letter from the head weld inspector at the nuclear station I was working at regarding my skill and other things. Like how many joints I welded and % of failures. No regrets The world I get to see is not what normal humans get to see.

I'm still working towards my piece of paper. I want to be a criminal profiler so I need a degree. It really depends what you're doing. Like doctors and all need degrees but if you want to run a business or go into marketing a degree isn't necessary. Having a degree sometimes is just there took look pretty.

It's not important at all. I graduated high school with D, E grades and managed to build multiple 6-7 figures businesses. If someone thinks that paper is worth anything these days, I'm sorry for them

I agree with you. It's all about motivation and learning. They don't really teach you any life learning skills in High school.

In school they teach you to graduate and find a job with some luck.

I didn’t finish HS and never got my GED yet I still did my dream job for my dream company and proved everyone wrong

Last year as a software developer I made $260K.

Be like that software developer who outsourced his work to guys in India. The only way he got caught was the network admin was going through the login I. P's and noticed there were I. P.'s from India logging into this employee's login to do the work for him. lol

If I could outsource my work, my company could outsource my work. They can't. We're hiring strong developers whenever we can. They are hard to find.

But we don't care if someone has a degree. We only care if they can do the job.
