Well first of all, your boss seems like a really nice family guy, discussing domestic issues with you mostly rather than more of frequent work related discussions could be his way of truly getting to know who you are, in the area of your true judgments and you knw, to know your average views in life. Every boss likes to know the best of their employees. Perhaps, if you could focus more on being the natural you when you're around him, he's probably going to gain more confidence in you, hence moving you onto the next stage of 'work affairs' discussions only.
