If you work at home , are you just as productive as when you worked in an office?

I teach at a local college and had to switch to remote learning in the middle of a semester.
i think it was a total fail. The students did not learn much and I am pretty sure a lot of them cheated on the exams.

I am far more productive at home.

Every time I get the option to take a course online, I choose it, and I have done that for the past four years concerning college courses. My traveling time is eliminated; and my professors' lectures, when written, are far more useful as I can review them at will, and I read far faster than they speak. My professors also communicate much better, as I do not have to compete with other students to have one-on-one conversations. Now, email communications are clear, available for reference, and there is no time limit concerning topics we can cover, so I do not have to prepare for office hours.

I believe that I am not the majority, but the minority. I believe that most people should be forced to attend in person, as most of the people I have taken classes with lack the discipline necessary to complete college level work. Not the curriculum, but the actual daily work. I wish the option to learn remotely was available for people who have proven that they can succeed in such an environment, but many people have motivations unrelated to knowledge retention, and this is the new world.

I am sorry that your students and college have placed you in such a position, and I hope that you can innovate, and overcome this challenge.

I used to work from home years ago way before Covid. At home or at the job, it wouldn't matter, either way I'll be productive..

When I work at home I tend to work more scattered hours. I think I'm probably less productive.

And yea, Musk is right, it's better if people work at the office. There is a lot more to it than how productive you are.

I mostly worked as a consultant, and usually got contracts out of state. Companies were VERY reluctant to have people work at home. They'd rather pay my travel expenses and motel than to work at home. I agree with them that it's worth it.

As an employee it's worth it to me also. I don't like working at home. I'd MUCH rather go to the office.

I personally am more productive, less distractions... but I know some co-workers who are not. One guy says he hates working from home, that he turns on the TV and gets distracted.

I said, don't be dumb... don't turn on the TV then, DUH... easy solution.

I'd say about 70% of the team is more productive but that other 30% is less, is way less productive.

We are all exempt so in my case, I just turned travel time into work time... which means I'm putting in a extra 30 minutes a day.

Per your update, I would learn better in a classroom. Demonstration, and hands on after that. As for my regular everyday job, though that I already know I'm way faster at home.

Although, with teams and close collaboration it has worked good to learn at home this way in small groups of 5 or 10... but I can't imagine a large group learning very good.

It varies for me.

At home I can get a lot done without interruption BUT I then have to call managers to cover stuff off for them, with Teams you never really know if fully free etc, in the office I could look across and see if on own and free.

I’ve been spending about 3-4 days in office and getting more done.

i have 4 desk screens and a video wall, so can get more done at work.

at home I’m limited to 3 screens

a lot of work and decisions actually get sorted around the coffee machine at work.

i hate meetings for the hell of them and will just target a couple people I want to do something, when getting a coffee is ideal.

Also I have a new PA so it’s worth going into work, as it created a ‘new’ job.

More productive when on site. They kinda left us alone. Also smaller staff and student body, that was nice.
more stress when working from home. It was meeting after meeting. Was in front of the computer all day. I didn’t like that. And most of the time, meetings were not necessary.

Kids benefited more with in person instructions. There is no comparison.
Remote kids with no parent support was at a lost… or disappeared. They learned to turn off their screen or didn’t know how to use their technology. It was a mess.

The worst thing for customers/clients is if you need to talk to someone about your account or a problem, we can't get through to anyone to assist us. They are all at home and no one is answering the telephone for the company with the only telephone number you have for that company. You are on your own. That has happened to me many many times! The worst are the utility companies. If you want your electricity hooked up - Gool luck with that!🤬

I can take more breaks working at home. But at the same time I am working later. But it's all good as I spend less time in traffic and less fuel costs than having driving to an office. Not everyone has that luxury though, especially if you work retail or hospitality.

in my very personal and specific case, yes... I am more productive because I am way way more comfortable, and I also have the flexibility to take care of some other things regarding my personal life and other things that I have going

things that, otherwise... would require me to drive a lot more, to go back and forth and that would be more draining, take more time and overall less efficient in many ways

but that is just my particular experience

I was actually more productive working from home compared to in the office. Fewer interruptions and I could spend more productive hours per day because I didn't need the 2 hour total commutet time to/from the office. I also got more sleep working from hine, again because no commute time needed, which meant I was more rested doing work.

I do some work at home (for my wife's business and my own).
I find there are simply too many distractions to have maximum efficiency at home.
And I gain more weight there, too!

My boyfriend and I both WFH two days a week. If anything, we are more productive, as we cut out the travelling time to get to work and back. We love what we are doing, so it isn't an issue doing extra work.
