How do graduate students balance a family with school with work?

I watched the news and 100% of the top 5 Ontario students who got 100% in every class had extra curricular activities outside school and it seemed that rather than hindering their academics, their extra curricular activities boosted their grade even higher than what it was before.

My friends said the more time they devoted to religion, the higher their grades were and my pastor said the more money people donated, the higher their income at their jobs. So I wonder if multi obligating can be beneficial and not just a drain of energy and time and brains and priorities and space. What do you think?
