How can I learn French to a conversational level within a year or so?

I wanted to learn another language another language because I feel like it would make me more refined and cultured.
And because I wish to become a sort of modern Polymath or renaissance man, and learning another language can be a part of that.

I choose French because it heavily influenced English and should be relatively easy to learn.

I also choose French because I love and appreciate the French and their culture and so wish to learn more about them and immerse myself more in the culture.

Thé most easy would be to go 1 months in France or to find a french family and pay them to live 1 months with them

we do this in France with British family people send their kid into British family living in France and they learn English during 2 weeks or 1 months Its a popular things but i don’t know if this exist in america

Actually we have foreign exchange in America but it isn’t super common.

There is actually a YouTuber from American who did this as a student and now he lives in Paris.

Did you watch that YouTube channel I linked? I found it useful because it has English subtitles and images.

I don’t think I could I think it’s more of a student exchange thing.
I’m using different apps to teach myself.

It’s not a student things but it’s usually for young people
Not sure if app work that well
Personally i ve learnt English alone by reading English book (and i used Google translate to translate every word i didn’t knew) my accent is terrible but my reading / writing us not too bad

Befriend/surround yourself with people who can speak it with you and around you (even online).
Watch shows & movies speaking French with English subtitles.
Listen to music or listen to audio lessons on YouTube. Be consistent.

I would say live in France for a year while learning but that's practically impossible for most people. Instead, stop watching American TV. Watch only French television, listen to French artists, and tune in only to French radio/podcasts. This is the closest thing you'll get to being stuck in France. While you do this use whatever language learning app/site you perfer and study as much as you want, though I recommend 5 days a week for an hour at least (like how you would in French class at highschool or something). This is my advice from someone who is bilingual and also beginner level in French. Good luck!

I know your pain, I'm juggling English, Chinese, French, Spanish, and some other languages at once (the other language just for fun, like simple phrases), while I master English and Chinese (but I can't read or write so much, anyone else feeling the second and third sound tones sound the same sometimes?), I'm still mastering french, I started when I was really young, like I was three, and had what you call an "on-off" relationship with French (yes, I'm aware I just caused you to smirk since that's a dating reference), and I still suck! Try Memrise, you are never getting anywhere with Duolingo.
