You're a business and are there to serve.
It's perfectly correct to close the doors so no other people come in and prolong the store being open. Politely explain what you're doing and tell them to take their time. You're keeping the store open for them and you value their visit.
This'll make the customer feel special and next time, they'll probably remember to come earlier... Having the store to themselves might ALSO encourage them to buy something out of a slight case of guilt!!!

I worked with time sensitive products that would get discarded if they weren't used up by the end of the day and guys would often flirt with me so they could take the left over product at the end of the day when I was supposed to throw them out or give them away to strangers for free.
My friends that use to work at the local skate shop used to play this song once it got close to closing... sadly no one ever got the hint.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/xGytDsqkQY8The only think you can do is give a reminder to the customers that you're closing/closed or make an excuse that you need to leave soon to give and incentive for them to buy something or come back BUT some people are just assholes and don't care.
"Closing time" is just a suggestion in my job. I stay as late as needed to get the current job done, or at least get it to a point where I can pick up where I left off the following day.
You're doing the right thing. So long as the customer gets there before closing time, they are entitled to shop.

I work at a kiosk where people just pull up. The park is open 24/7 so there's nothing I can do about it. Only one of the kiosks has shutters that go around the whole thing, so I can lock it up and no one will know I'm in there.
The rest of them, I just make the use the self pay machine. I work 10 hour shifts so they can go fuck themselves.
But one time I had some campers come in 5 minutes before I left. But they had a reservation so I went ahead and check them in, but the assholes decided to buy firewood. But on occasion I had a long line 'cuz my co-worker called in, I straight up told them I already put my money away and don't have change and can't do anymore transactions.
The problem isn't so much that they come in, 'cuz I can direct them to the self pay machine, but the problem is when they show up when I'm doing my bloody closing paperwork! For 23 years working at the same place this is a daily occurrence for us. We however are a bar/restaurant and will turn them away usually. For the food side we have closed the kitchen long before the bar so those wanting food we turn away. Sometimes if we are closing and someone just wants the bar, if a few customers are still sitting there we will let the late comer in,, but if everybody is out and bar is cleaned up we let nobody in.
When I was a teenager It happened from time to time. I'd just tell them the dinning room was closed and they had to take out. Then I make them some food real quick and get them out the door in five minutes or whatever and then lock up and do all the closing work before getting out of there. Most of the time I'd just lock the doors five minutes early and flick the dining room lights off to avoid that.
Not too long ago I had a customer come in with a coupon. The problem was I could only accept coupons during business hours, he had to pay full price after hours. He took that as I wasn't willing to serve him... He cried like a little baby on Yelp because I wasn't willing to take a 1/2 price service when Im on OT.
In a nut shell Im working for free.
It happens. If you’re not technically closed. Just try to provide the best customer service that you can. While it might suck sometimes. I’m sure we are all guilty of it at least at some point in our lives.
If it’s past closing time. They’re not entitled to service. I don’t know your policy at your workplace. But. Yeah. You gotta be nice to customers if they’re not being rude and hostile to you.
I sometimes have to address a problem on our network just before I am supposed to go home. I usually stay until I fix the issue. It really does not happen very often.
I’m a waitress, it happens all the time, it sucks but that’s what we are here to do
You are so so sweet! No wonder they like your personalized services after hours!
If you close at 8p. m. for example 7:59 is before 8 so you help them. Of course a little common sense goes a long way. I mean I've dealt with customers that come in at the last minute and then want to take thier time. That's a little maddening.
I haven't worked retail in many years but when I did the manager would do exactly like you did and lock up behind them so nobody else could come in.
Always and usually the ones that are the most annoying.
You don't seem to mind. lol
Amazing pic by the way!I will often get calls for rush orders at 1655 when I close at 1700. I just keep working till I finish, but charge them an expedite, generally double regular, for doing the work. If it happens on Friday, then usually triple.
You are both fucking stupid.
They for not noticing the time of close, and you for risking your job and the premises for nothing.
I’ve had it happen so many times. It’s all good if they are respectful, like get your food, eat it within 20 mins and gtfo. I’ve had people come in 2 mins before closing and chill for fucking 2 hours tho.
that is wrong
I don’t know why but I’m thinking of this in a dirty way and I hope its not what I’m thinking
A better solution would be to stop admitting people in at a certain time before the actual closure. I would do that.
I don't close my business but so far I haven't had a call for business after 8pm
The 7-11 were I worked was open 24/7 and I had the graveyard shift.
Let them know that we close in a minute. And they will need to hurry and make there selection or get locked in for the night
Welp thanks to corporate we have to serve them and then we get to reclean everything so yeah
