I am looking to get into broadcast journalism after college. I am a senior and am approaching college graduation soon. I’ve had a few internships but mainly with news writing.
My cousin ended up knowing a guy who used to work as a sports reporter and I called him on the phone and he gave me some great advice. He told me to join the news station at my college and try to get some reporting experience there. By now I know I just need to try and build my reel ( which are clips of me reporting ).
A girl in my class worked for the news at my school and she gave me the email and put me in touch with the guy who is in charge of video and reporting. At first he wanted to meet and discuss some things then he went back and told me to join the station groupchat and that’s when I would hear about all the opportunities.
Eventually I ended up being hired and filled out all of the paperwork
I was also put in the news group to do a little bit of writing but I prefer on camera experience since I’m familiar with writing.
I tried to reach back out to the guy and let him know I joined the group chat and wanted to know specifically where I can find the reporter opportunities because there’s nowhere but I sent that like 3 weeks ago and haven’t heard anything lol. I sent a follow up like 2 days ago just to remind him that I joined and didn’t know what to do next. I’ve been very respectful. We’ve never met to discuss anything either. He’s also a photographer so has his company and other stuff going on but I’ve heard nothing back from him and he’s answered in the groupchat since then.
I almost feel like I’m inconveniencing him because he hasn’t answered and it’s frustrating because this is the only way I know how to jump off my career and the person who can help me isn’t doing anything. What should I do?

Tough situation. Bad social skills on his part. You wrote to him 3 weeks ago and no answer, and gave a follow up a few days ago and still no answer. Yet he's been active on the group chat. That doesn't sound good at all. He's either directly ignoring you because he thinks you're not serious or not worth responding to, or someone else manages his inbox.
Either way if I were you I would try to see if there's anybody else I could reach out to or connect with.
You need to be persistent if you really want this. Those jobs are pretty scarce and there is a lot of competition for them.
Sounds like being an infuancer to me.
