I've already done the military stint, and glad I did, even gladder that I'm done.
Being a PI without an investigator background of some kind is pretty dodgy.
I've never really had any inclination to be a beat cop, but I would be more likely to pursue a county sheriff department job as long as it's away from inner cities.
If this is for career advice, then skip the military if your goal is to be a cop. It's not going to do much for you even in the hiring process because most departments are undermanned right now. In either case, it takes a few years of experience before you can become an investigator or detective.
Police officer you have to deal with the public. The general public are generally scum. That and everything you’re dealing with everyday is something bad. You’re never going somewhere for a happy event.
Military you get ordered to check a corner, boom dead. No thanks.
Private investigator you can be your boss.

I wpould go in the military. Being a cop today is just ridiculous and being a private investigator is not like you see on TV. You just go around taking pictures of cheating spouses.
