I need advice for a nursing degree. My goal is to become a paediatric nurse. I failed GCSEs. I only got a level 2 English with 4 other level 2 GCSEs. I know a pass in maths is essential to study nursing at university. As well as A levels which I don’t have those (which is level 3 qualifications) I’m currently luckily in university for languages as I didn’t need the best grades for that course. Now my options are continue that course for 4 years and try get a maths qualification online and then apply for a postgraduate degree after completing my language degree which is another 2 years on the postgraduate degree so 6 years of study with two degrees (I’ll be basically 28-29 : ) or do I study maths online now and take a higher education course in healthcare at college which then gives me an A level and I’ll have maths and apply for an undergraduate degree next year in nursing and study a total of 4 years. (I’ll be 26-27) I’m just upset I already left it late as I dread being 30 but worried I’ll do the second option and fail maths every year and take even longer and then I also lose my place in my language degree if I don’t go back in October this year

Here's what I would say dude:
Honestly man, don't stress too much about your age - as long as you get your degree and fulfill your dream of being a nurse, that's all that really matters. 26-30 really isn't that old!
My advice would be to focus on the route that gets you qualified in the shortest time. So I'd probably go for doing the maths and healthcare course at college now to get your A Level and do undergrad nursing starting next year. 4 years vs possibly 6 years is a big difference.
And don't put too much pressure on yourself - take the maths one step at a time. It might take you a few tries to pass, but as long as you keep working at it, you'll get there. Just make sure to ask teachers for help if you're struggling.
The languages degree is nice, but nursing should be the priority since that's your true goal. Don't stress too much about quitting it - you can always go back part-time later on in life if you want. But for now, focus on the healthcare course and knocking out those nursing prerequisites as fast as possible. You've got this dude!
Thank you! I’m going to do the higher education course and do maths online! So yeah you’re right it’s defo better to do the quicker way. As long as I put my mind to it I’m sure I can pass. Thank you
You're welcome, sis! I'm so glad I could provide some helpful advice. Taking the higher education route with maths online is definitely the faster path to get you into nursing school sooner. As long as you put in the work, I know you'll crush it - you've already shown you're a determined person by pursuing your dreams even after some setbacks. Don't doubt yourself, you've got this in the bag. Feel free to touch base if you need any encouragement or help studying along the way. I'm rooting for you! In a few years you'll be looking back so proud of how far you've come. You're going to make an amazing pediatric nurse, just wait and see. Now go kill it girl!
With the shortage of nurses we have at the moment in the UK, are you certain you can't just walk in to an NHS Hospital with your CV and say. I'm studying but I would like to work here as a trainee as I study.
My Cousin walked in to his local Hospital, without any qualifications during the pandemic and said 'I want to work.. Find me something.' They took him on and he's now worked his way up.. He wanted to be a paramedic but following a car accident was unable to progress.
I won't mention the hospital, but if you wish me to.. you can send me a pm and I will do so in there.
Thank you. I don’t think they would do that with a nurse. I have asked around universities and they won’t even accept me unless I have level 3 and level 2 qualifications. I was thinking the same though considering the nhs is going downhill I thought they’d maybe lower the entry requirements
The thing is, you don't HAVE to go in as a nurse. do you? I mean you are training and if you're working there in whatever capacity it has to stand you in good stead for when you DO pass. no?
