If person A hires person B to do a job, and person B messes it up, who is more at fault?

I mean, technically person B messed up. But person A hired him. So who is more at fault?

Person A is at fault. He picked person B to do the job.

Person B is at fault. It was his job. He messed up.

It depends.

1. If Person A is an ineffective boss and Person B is a dolt hired to make the boss look good and fails to do so then they're both idiots, right?

2. If Person A hired based on a resume with inaccuracies and didn't fact-check (or hired based on nepotism, etc. etc.) and Person B is the liar, it's also on both of them, however the responsibility for not doing the due diligence falls on Person A.

3. If Person A has don their due diligence and Person B is just messing up then the responsibility falls on Person B.

If Person B gave the impression that he’s qualified to do the job but ended up messing it up then person B is at fault. But, if Person A hired Person B without really considering his qualifications or background, and only hired him as a form of nepotism then Person A is responsible.
