Why do I prefer studying by myself rather than having a mentor/teacher?

That's not completely a choice. To be honest I discovered that tendency in me plainly by experience. Peferring to study by oneself is a natural tendency in some people, although one never really studies only by oneself. There are always people, directly or not (books for instance) and circumstances we learn from.

The difference is probably a mental mechanism in processing what we want to learn. Other people have not the choice and not the mental suppleness to learn by themselves, and thus need mentors and teachers all the time. Actually, the truth here is not black or white. There are many shades of grey, depending among others on the involved topics.
