What is a Gender & Queer studies degree good for?

I know a girl in the old neighbourhood was acting very snooty about her 4 years in college getting a degree in gender queer & studies the last time I was home and like the girl in the picture she works at Costa Coffee. I got way better results in my GCSEs& A levels and have a B-tech and a few NVQs but she was acting like I was an uneducated pleb stupid for marrying and having a baby young and she was an elite in academia. I shouldn't gloat but she could have worked those four years at Costa Coffee and done her gender degree with the open university avoiding thousands of student debt while earning. I saw an interesting video about how women (on average) care more about equity, social justice and moral goals than men whereas men care more about truth and hard facts in academia. Which is why the more women at University the more things like DEI get introduced. Honestly I don't know where this is gonna lead. I consider myself a very leftwing person when it comes to economic issues I think rich people should pay more taxes and the poorest people should still have an acceptable standard of living. Because money flows to those who already have money, so there needs to be a counterbalance to that. But with these identity politics issues I just can't support it. I feel like the main reason why they gain so much traction is because fighting on economic issues you have to take on the most powerful people in the world and all the politicians in the U. S. are bought by these people so they can't run on that. But identity politics was seen as the less disruptive way to win voters. We do business as usual we just change a few faces and put some flags up once in a while.  But now it has reached a point where it's causing a lot of disruption and division. How should I support a movement that openly supports discrimination against white men or men in general. We're gonna solve racial gender and sexuality issues by focusing more on race gender and sexuality when hiring/promoting people. That won't cause any problems.  I feel like the division will only deepen as time goes on. Because people who believe in this ideology they have built their whole identity around it, their world view it's all based on on oppression and injustice and what to do about it. They won't give up on it. And on the other side nobody likes to be targeted and villainized. I don't really see how anything positive can come from this.  Thankfully it's only online so far for me. I know people who have these beliefs and they're fine irl. Of course I don't know what they're thinking but as long as they don't mistreat me I'm fine. But I know that these issues affect people irl. In the next ten years there will probably be a bunch of lawsuits about discrimination. I don't know it's just a mess.  I think it's important to try and understand other people and where these priorities and ideas are coming from but that doesn't mean I will agree to things that I don't see as right.

It seems that most people in the comments here are taking a piss on gender/queer studies. They probably can't name one course in the degree. I'll admit, neither can I.

If you want to look at schooling and education as a factory where you are prepared to do a job, then gender/queer studies probably aren't the first thing you'd go to. Sure, there are employers interested in people with this degree, but you'd probably have a hard time finding them.

If you look at education as something uniquely enriching to your life, perhaps these studies aren't so bad. If you are really interested in the subject, you can learn stuff there that no one else will be able to teach you. Whether there is enough matter to fill a 4 year degree, I don't know.

A good education should be honest about what job opportunities you have after the education. If most alumni work a low-wage job and are having a hard time paying off an expensive debt... Then that's a problem of course. In the Netherlands, tuition is the same for every degree (roughly €2500 per year) and students get a monthly grant, so this wouldn't be such an issue here.

Probably the best way to find out is to just ask her. Perhaps she has some regrets about her education and is struggling financially. Perhaps she knew that job opportunity wouldn't be amazing after college. Perhaps she's setting up something beside her work. Perhaps something entirely different is going on. No use in making assumptions.

I think you'd agree that it's an interesting degree choice, whether you'd choose the same or not. I'd be interested to know what moved someone to choose the degree and what their future plans are.

In the real world, a gender & queer studies degree is worth less than nothing. I say less than, because if a holder of such a degree applies for a job and shows the degree on their resume, the prospective employer will see it, and the vast majority will judge the candidate negatively for spending four years of their life on such a worthless endeavor. If the candidate DOESN'T list the degree on their resume, the employer will wonder what the candidate did with those four years of their life. Either way, it's a liability.
