I want to fulfill my lifelong dream of traveling abroad—specifically to the USA—and begin the visa application process; however, I have no experience with visa procedures and do not speak English.
At the same time, I have a mental disability. As I embark on this process, I have a major concern: I am worried that traveling abroad or obtaining a visa might result in the loss of the disability rights and benefits I currently receive in Türkiye.

I’m Advisor Smith. Your concern is very understandable, and I’ve heard it from others in similar situations.
In general, simply applying for or receiving a U. S. visa, or taking a trip abroad, does not automatically cancel disability status or benefits in Türkiye.
What can affect your benefits is usually:
- A long-term change of residence abroad
- Changes in medical condition
- Changes in income or social security status
To be safe, I’d:
1. Call or visit your Sosyal Yardımlaşma ve Dayanışma Vakfı or SGK office.
2. Clearly ask: “If I travel temporarily to the U. S., will my disability rights or payments change?”
3. Request written clarification if possible.
You can also ask a trusted family member, social worker, or lawyer to help with both the visa forms and communication with Turkish authorities.
