What would you do if your child was suspended for fighting back against a bully?

Happened to my brother in law. We took him out for a day of fun, because fuck the school for punishing a kid for protecting him self. The day involved a local retro arcade, mini golf and a dinner of his choosing. His mom, my sister approved lol. I swear, this is why we have adults that would rather attack crime victims than hold criminals to account.

This happened on school grounds and not off, right? The anon female makes me feel like I’m missing something lol but if this was on school grounds then I would support the child, of course. I don’t think punishing for self defense would be fair, considering they’ve been picked on by this bully and didn’t throw the first punch.

I would talk to the child about it, first... to see what happened

I would go to the school... and talk to the school about it

then I would talk to the parents of the bully, and the bully as well

and then I would talk to the child again... the more of a perspective, from all angles too, that I have, the better... then I would try to make sure it doesn't happen again

Not too sure but I definitely wouldn't punish them. The zero tolerance school violence rule is pretty fucking retarded anyway. I've heard for some that even when you're randomly attacked with no provocation without even fighting back you still get in trouble because according to the rules "you must've provoked them for them to want to attack you in the first place"... 🤦

Yup... and in the case of physical education/PE this is especially true. PE teachers were often jocks and bullies themselves so they can't empathize with quieter kids.

Exactly. Its how it was when i was in school. 4th Grade i was suspended for three days because one of the kids decided it would be fun to smash my head against the toilet repeatedly.

I would reward my kid and explain why world is unfair and filled with idiots. How to deal with this hypocrisy and that being honest to yourself no matter how bitter the truth might be is the key for success.

Unfortunately at least in most places in the US, schools have a zero tolerance policy for violence, which means if he protects him self he gets consequences.

Yet they allowed the other kid to harass your nephew; which almost certainly involved either violence or threats of violence. To which, the law allows you to defend yourself from such actions. You can't have a zero tolerance policy for violence if you are turning a blind eye to bullying. At that point you are tolerating the violence of the bully.
