Great Metal Bands!

Metal is my favorite genre. I have listened to many bands but two came out on top for me. That would be Sabaton and Gloryhammer.

#1. Sabaton

I love this band for a few reasons.

My first is crowd interactions. They're always really funny in between songs and never fail to make me laugh.

Next, their lyrics. I love their focus on historical wars. I find history very interesting and if it can be woven into my favorite genre of music, oh boy. Most songs have a sort of story that follows a side of a group or faction. That song, Swedish Pagans, doesn't follow a war, but, well, Swedish pagans.

Finally, their lack of voice altering. Sometimes I like hearing robotic sounding music, but it feels so disappointing looking up a live concert and they sound like inbred barbarians. An example of that is "Brother's Of Metal". I believe a few song use auto tune, but most of it is a chorus from the other band members.

#2. Gloryhammer

My favorite thing about this band is the story. It follows Angus McFife, the crown prince of the fantasy world of Dundee stopping the evil sorcerer Zargothrax. The story currently goes over 2 albums (Each about an hour in length total) about the epic quests and friends Angus must do to become strong enough to stop the wizard.

Another thing I like is the way they perform on stage. They do it in costumes! Not much more on that, I just think it's really cool.

Last but not least is the battles. I'm going to avoid spoiling the story, but the way they describe the fight scenes. Some are quick, mainly in the first album. In the second one though, sh!t gets real, and it's awesome! (Apocalypse 1992, the last song in the 2nd album is a great example)

If anyone can recommend me some more bands to listen to that would be greatly appreciated!

  • Metallica: "Kill em all"
    Slayer: "Seasons in the abyss"
    Black Sabbath: "Paranoid"
White Zombie: "La sexorcisto-- devil music vol. 1"
    AC/DC: "Back in black"
some of my favorite albums from great artists, NOT in order of importance. and yeah, i know some of you may think AC/DC isn't metal, I just see it as the roots of metal really, or just simply early metal. They're rock n roll too : )

  • I go through phases and I have a few bands I will have on rotation depending on new releases or if I revisit a band that I used to play heavy.

Like right now I am really digging The Faceless "Becoming a Ghost". Such a fun ride of an album. I love the instrumentation and also the vocals sometimes sound like Depeche Mode (there is even a cover of "Shake the Disease" on the album).

Also really like the new Ne Obliviscaris album, "Urn". I was a big fan of their last album, and this one is just as good. Once again, uses some really nice string instrumentation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RMax1LS3pM

Besides progressive and folk metal, I do like some deathcore as well if it is done right. A band I recently discovered, Through the Eyes of the Dead, has some killer double bass and I instantly fell in love with their new album "Disomus", especially this track...

My favorite metal bands though are Lamb of God, Gojira, Mastodon, System of a Down, Amon Amarth, The Black Dahlia Murder, At The Gates, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Opeth, In Flames, Sepultura, Municipal Waste, Meshuggah, Kreator, The Haunted, August Burns Red, Ensiferum, All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, Between the Buried and Me, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sylosis, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation... so many bands...

Stoner rock/metal is awesome too. Bands like Asteroid, The Sword, Red Fang, Paulbearer. Queens of the Stone Age, and so on.

  • Power Metal isn't exactly my type of thing. Sabaton is the only one I like that's apart of power metal. I'm in a mix between Metalcore and Death Metal. This is examples of what I like.
