Animated Atrocities: Disney's Doug

Doug was one of Nickelodeon's original three cartoons along with Rugrats and Ren and Stimpy. Debuting in August 1991, It was popular, although it was not as popular as the latter two counterparts would become. Doug would eventually run till 1994 as Nickelodeon thought it was too wholesome compared to the raunchier Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life. Unlike the two previously mentioned Doug did not really rely on adult humor, but instead on more real-life teen angst.

In the mid-'90s Disney decided to pick up the series in agreement that the Nick Episodes would stay with Nick. This means Disney made changes, and boy did they ever. For instance: The Characters received new clothes and looks as seen in the two photos above. The Characters' personalities also changed. Roger the school bully became a millionaire overnight, Patti started homeschooling and got a shorter haircut, Skeeter was experiencing puberty early on, Doug also would become overwhelmed with all the changes including the addition of a little sister.

Disney's version also was more educational and moralistic than the Nickelodeon version. Topics discussed in episodes ranged from Peer Pressure, Nicotine use, Anorexia, baldness, toxic friendships, and et cetera. The other major change was the episodes were one 30 minute segment rather than two fifteen minute segments.

Needless to say, fans of the Nickelodeon version were not happy. However, it was very successful for Disney. They added a Themepark show, A movie, and toy line which Nickelodeon did not do until recently. For a revival of a show, it did well running from 1996- 1999 and airing in reruns till the mid-2000s. Today, when we think of reboots like Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans, GO we generally think of them in a negative sense as they are just a shadow of the show they were in our childhood. Nickelodeon has been rebooting old cartoons for one shot tv movie deals like Hey Arnold and Rocko's Modern Life. Nickelodeon has also picked up an upcoming Rugrats reboot. Could Doug be next?
