Albums and Songs that have pulled me through my last five years of living 🙈

Disclaimer:

I’m just sharing some of my (recent) musical interests. If what I have to present doesn’t suit your taste, that is fine but don’t go being an asshole complaining about it.

Kicker (album) 2015

~ZELLA DAY~

Kicker, Zella Day
Kicker, Zella Day

This girl singlehandedly saved me from cutting off pop music completely. For a minute I was becoming one of those annoying whiners who complained about there being “no good music left”. But thank the good lawd for this album coming out in 2015.

Prior to Zella Day, I was really only listening to Lana Del Rey and although her music charts in the pop category often, her overall sound was a little too mellow for me to genuinely consider it pop music. But anyways, the Kicker album was extremely refreshing. Not only did Zella Day cover mature themes sexual infatuation, she also covered love, regret, and being naive with references from old English literature and the Bible. Her raspy voice and colorful lyricism paints a beautiful picture of the ups and downs of a young girl from Arizona just trying to figure out life as she struggles with her sense of self and relationships.

My top three songs are:

1. Hypnotic

2. 1965

3. Shadow Preachers

Process (album) 2017

~SAMPHA~

What the fuck do I actually have to say about this dude? He is EVERYWHERE. Hiding in plain sight...just being talented as fuck without a cause. He produces. He writes. He sings. Bitch, he makes money. But he makes it by sneaking behind the curtain, making magic, not drawing too much attention to himself, rarely taking credit. Always on other people’s shit, making people chart to the top. When this man FINALLY released his own project, you better believe I flipped my shit!!! You literally have no idea how excited I was to see this man stand front and center of a musical masterpiece. And even though he’s pretty much non existent in the mainstream world, his following is damn near cult like...fortunately I am one of those followers. Haha 😇

My top three songs are:

1. Plastic 100•C”

(fan made video with studio version)

Actual song live

2. Under

(I can’t link you to anything because there are only bad recordings of his live performances. The album is available on Apple Music and iTunes if you care to stream it)

3. Blood on me

Je te laisserai des mots (song) 2011/2015

~PATRICK WATSON~

Now I did say within the last 5 years but for this song I made an exception because even though it was made in 2011, it didn’t get OFFICIALLY released until 2015. The 2015 version only included some string parts but honestly I like the original better 😇

For those that do not know, French is actually my first language despite being born in Atlanta, Georgia USA 😂 so I did grow up listening to French (francophone) music more so than American. It really wasn’t until I was a teen that I really started paying attention to American music. One of my favorite artists of all time is Patrick Watson. He is from a francophone country, Canada. Most of his discography is in English, however, it was his underground sound that had me hook. And wouldn’t you believe it, most of it was in French! Even if you don’t know the language, this song I am introducing you to will probably (most definitely) melt your heart.

Here is an English translation of the song:

I’ll leave you words
Underneath your door
Underneath the singing moon
Near the place where your feet pass by
Hidden in the holes of wintertime
And when you’re alone for a moment

Kiss me
Whenever you want

Kiss me
Whenever you want

Kiss me
Whenever you want

actual song:

Amara Terra Mia (song cover) 2010

Again, Patrick Watson— This time covering an old song. Not one of his own. But his rendition I LOVE.

Saturn (album) 2018

~NAO~

Saturn, Nao

This bitch can SAAAANNGGG. I love her voice. Her whole style and vibe is just so unique. Her and her band are just underrated as fuck.

Her sound is very diverse. She gives you a little electronic, a little jazz, a little hip hop, a little r&b, and a little pop too. Like damn shawty, what can’t you do??? 😯

My top three favorite songs:

1. Orbit

2. Saturn (title track)

this video is her and her band performing both songs live....yes LIVE. I’ll give y’all the studio version too because I want you to know how fucking amazing her voice is. She sounds great either way. Like bruh. The talent. You can TASTE it.

3. Drive and Disconnect

Ok I’m done for now. I hope I’ve broadened your musical taste just a tiny bit. I listen to everything from pop to rock to rap to blues to dubstep...whatever. I love everything to be honest...well, I do hate country music. But that’s it 😂

If you would like a part 2, let me know. I can show you guys other artists if you feel like hearing something new.

Thank you for your time.
