Video game based movies which weren't as good as the video games!

1. Resident Evil

Really hate this one. No originality. The story, the protagonist and the actors were fucked up. Nothing like the ones in the video game. I absolutely don't know from where did they get that shitty idea of having this Russian chick play as the protagonist.

Even in one of the sequels where there is a guest like appearance of the protagonists of the video game i.e Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy, their presence there meant nothing and she was made to play hero. One can't mess up a story as bad as this.

Can't see those two not being the ass kickers.

2. Mortal Kombat

Kudos for the effective outwordly atmosphere and cheesy visuals, this movie still sufferered from poorly constructed plot, subpar acting and hilarious dialogues. Not to mention, the unnecessarily hyped fights and the expressions while dialogue delivery.

3. Tekken

Tekken is at least the ultimate proof that copying the characters and their aesthetics from a video game doesn't always work out in a live action movie.

Like seriously? Jon Foo was made to play Jin Kazama? Lol I have seen cosplays doing better than him.

4. Assassin's Creed

Really a boring movie to watch. I had to forcefully make myself believe again and again that I am watching an Assassin's Creed movie. Oh come on! Is it too much to ask for one successful leap of faith 😕?

The movie had crappy dialogues, no character development, no depth, was incoherent and bloated.

5. Need For Speed

I'm a little confused here. Is this the Need For Speed we are talking about or the Need For Revenge? There are many holes and errors in the movie including the death of Pete which happened during the day but another character said that he died in the night.

The movie title was so promising but it really failed to deliver what it had to. Gotta say, Fast and Furious did it better.

The cars and the acting in the movie could only compensate too far.

6. Max Payne

I can't really point out anything specific wrong in this movie but it was way too boring. The idea of those creatures flying around was completely unnecessary. It was good for once to show the hallucinations which the addicts suffered but setting it on repeat felt like there was nothing new someone could come up with even when they had such an amazing story already.

Again, as usual, there was an unnecessary change in the story which resulted in an entirely different climax. The environment was all same as that in the game but I saw no point of changing the story. Dunno why they had to it. The movie had so much potential, but down the line, something went wrong.

7. Far Cry

Far Cry is a bad movie compared to the video game's decency. Til Schweiger did a good job for an actor who isn't the best in the world but words can't really describe how bad this movie was.

8. Hitman: Agent 47

A character like Hitman is never expected to be seen troubled or too worried. In this movie however, the character seemed like he was shitting his pants. Its prequel was still good but the cast of this movie wasn't so appreciable either. Friend was such a miscast to play the role of Hitman and the action was so old school.

I guess that will be all.

I would've added more crashes but I haven't seen all of them and I don't think I would like to either!

The one I was most disappointed by was Prince of Persia Sands of Time. I was a massive fan of the games loved them and the story in the game and the film sucked. I did however like Assassin's Creed I thought it tied in quite nicely with the games. The new Tomb Raider movie I thought was also quite good. Games to movie are always going to be tricky because half of the story in a game is made by the player and their interaction you can never get that in a movie so there will always be something different or missing that fans of the games will not like. Take for example books to movie reading a book and then watching a film based on that book will always be different because your imagination makes up part of that book, the same is almost the same when playing a game you are the director when you play a game, so watching the film of that game will not be the same. It's tricky. I do hope at some point we do get better versions of games to movies. I think when comics and books are being made into better films now it won't be long until games are made into really good blockbuster movies too.

Is it even possible to make a Need For Speed movie that stays true to the games though? Because all the games had random stories built around racing, so in my honest opinion the Need For Speed movie was pretty good. I agree with all the other movies. Max Payne ruined the entire idea of movies based on videogames for me and I didn't even watch Assassin's Creed. The stories just don't match up to those in the videogames they're based on.

in my opinion, I don't think that Need For Speed required that much emotions and drama. They should've kept it on the roads or follow the typical story of a Need For Speed game. A new guy is in town, slowly makes it big till he starts racing in hyper cars with several driver jobs, hard feelings with rivals and risks in between.

Yeah you're not wrong there and it will be more appealing to the fans of the games but that sort of story doesn't exactly fit a movie. That sort of story is more suitable for a short TV/Web series. In movies, for the rise of a racer to truly have an impact on the viewers will need a series of 2-3 films which I'm sure won't work well because it'll be 2-3 movies filled with the same stuff till it ends on the top racing rival in the last movie. And if it's all fit into one movie then the struggle from the game fans (you know, buying cars, upgrading, police chases) gets kind of ruined 😅. Like NFS Most Wanted or even Payback for example, they'd make great TV/Web series but not good movies.

Haha. I didn't mean two say filling up the entire movie with racing and upgradation lol. A scene or two would be nice. Your idea of making a T. V series seems cool but at the same time it may or may not get boring seeing the races all the time. Many would like it.. at least I would lol. But then again, they can try making a movie which can be about 2.5 hours long ig? They can sum it up. 30 minutes of history, 1 hour of everyday racing, upgradation, moving up in the world, introduction to the enemy, 30 minutes of build up of tension and 15-20 minutes of showdown etc. That still saves 10 minutes for them 😂.

I'm not sure man, it's definitely possible but I'm not sure it would make a good movie. It might end up looking like a cutscene compilation from the games. 😅 Too much action is also not good for a movie. Only important stuff also ruins some movies. Quite moments, drama, emotions, they're all required for the characters to be relatable. Now, your list isn't wrong at all. The title question makes it very clear and I definitely agree that the Need For Speed movie wasn't as good as the games so there's no real disagreement here. I'm just saying the movie overall, ignoring the games, was quite good (personal opinion of course). 😄👍

What was wrong with mortal kombat? It was basically the game. The effects were good for the time, the actors actually look like their characters.

Also Uwe Boll movies they aren't just bad, they are intentionally bad as they weren't made to make money.

Terminator was released almost a decade ago when Mortal Kombat was released. It was far better than MK.

Terminator 1s effects were pretty shoddy but they used dark tones to hide the fact and there wasn't a lot of really complicated effects. Check out the rubber face when the terminator removes his eye to see what I mean.

T2 was around the same time but it was also the most expensive film ever made at the time so it stands to reason that it is going to shit all over it.

Mortal Kombat pretty much followed the game and yes it cheesy but so is the game and it was the first video game movie to accurately portray the source material. A fairer comparison would be the street fighter movie, now that was bad.

Excluding movies where games were derived from movies like the Toy Story or Kung Fu panda games more for brand marketing than game experience I can’t think of a single game where the movie was better than the game mostly because the game was very popular in order to warrant the attention needed to move it from game platform to the big screen.

I'm convinced a true good adaptation can't be done. Wreck it Ralph that plays off cameos and influences is as good as you're gonna get. Hollywood and game developers are just from 2 different planets and can't properly communicate with each other

I liked the first resident evil film... Shit all to do with the game but it was a fun film unlike the cut-paste action sequels.
I didn't even know there was a need for speed film... Seems a bit redundant with fast and furious out there.
