To all the Gen Z kids out there and some Millenials we know this movie was lowkey generation defining as they say. I recently discovered my best friend has not seen this movie, she's avoided it her whole life because she hates corny musicals. BUT because I'm her best friend, she agreed to watch it with me tomorrow.
She knows I'm going to sing-along and she says it was either me or her family friend called something (I forgot his name lol) was gonna make her watch it and I am so proud that I am the one to get her to watch it๐
So in preparation for tomorrow, I thought:
Why not talk about the songs? Because, fun.
#1 - The Start Of Something New
This is how you meet people in high school or secondary school (because I'm British) or whatever you call it. You just sing a duet together and bam you've made friends and there's all these random people around you cheering you on.
Not. That's a lie.
This is one of those songs I know all the words to though, and I have no shame in that๐It's so corny how they meet but 6-year-old me ate corny-ness up๐
As a kid I thought this was really cool and romantic, but now I see how it's kinda awkward- especially when he takes off his jacket- I mean that shirt... But I suppose he can get away with that, because he's Zac Efron๐๐
Anyways moving on...
#2 - Getcha Head In The Game
Oh yes, when you get to high school/secondary school PE that's definitely what it's like. You know, just some casual motivational singing- the best player is the lead (so obviously I was always the lead๐) and then the rest of the team is the backup singers + the kids who never got picked.
Another lie๐
The reality of PE for me was, I was one of the kids picked last- and even then, we were all still shit at the game- most of us could barely dribble the ball, let alone do a whole shmucking dance routine with it๐๐
This is Zac Efron's song so I just wanna say, when I was younger I had a huge crush on Zac Efron, who didn't to be fair?๐๐Actually quite a few people I know didn't but eh, what the heck?๐
And someone at my secondary school actually looked like Zac Efron...
One of my teachers๐๐
We were pretty convinced he was Zac Efron's long lost cousin or something๐
And I call my brother "Troy" or "Baby Efron" because he has the Troy hair๐I also call him High School Musical but he doesn't understand because he watched HSM with me when he was a baby so he doesn't remember it๐๐
Then me and my friends at secondary school made up a tale about Zac Efron๐๐After High School Musical, he met my teacher, his long lost cousin then gave my brother his Troy hair then ran away to the circus and did the trapeze with Zendaya๐๐
Okay I'm sorry, I'll stop now- don't judge me๐๐
#3 - What I've Been Looking For
This song never fails to get stuck in my head, and my favourite part is the "do-do-do-dodo do-do-do-do-dodoooo" I love walking around the house singing that part๐๐
And back in the day, I hated Ryan and Sharpay... But now they're just purely a mood and a half๐
And this song is actually still pretty good๐
My brother was watching a meme compliation and this song came in the middle of it- and I asked him:
Me: "What's that?"
Him: "A meme"
My mind: "No that's Ryan and Sharpay from High School Musical, idiot."๐๐
And their dancing is just on point here๐๐๐
#4 - What I've Been Looking For (Reprise)
I do love this version too, it's much slower and has an obvious more romantic vibe, BUT I prefer the Ryan and Sharpay version.
Nothing against Troy and Gabriella- they were more or less my childhood OTP but this... Is Ryan and Sharpay's song๐๐.
#5 - Stick To The Status Quo
๐๐๐This song is such a phat MOOD
I used to dance along to it infront on the TV and try and copy them and I legitimately thought this is what secondary school would be like or as I called it back then, "big school"๐๐
Honestly, the dude that likes to bake- he was my favourite because his reaction is just amazing๐๐Like c'mon guys he just wants to make the perfect crรจme brรปlรฉe! Is that such a crime?
But it's just his face which gets me every time now, just the look on his face when they're all like "NO! NO! NO! NOOOOO!"๐๐And then they almost make him drop his Crรจme brรปlรฉe! I'd be his friend๐
And how the cello guy just somehow gets a cello out of nowhere then it disappears๐
Also, I kinda find this song a little contridictary. They're all judging Troy for singing but THAT'S LITERALLY WHAT THEY'RE DOING- SINGING๐๐
And then...
Hip Hop Girl: "It's just dancing, sometimes I think it's cooler than homework"
Nerds: NO NO NO!!!
Also the nerds: *Dancing instead of doing their homework๐๐*
I mean kids actually jumped on the tables at my secondary school in the canteen... But not for singing๐๐If some kids got into a fight everyone would jump on the tables and start screaming- I didn't though, I didn't care- I was too lazy for that๐
But I just love the NOOOOO NO NO NO! lines in this song๐๐Plus it gives me an excuse to make a reference at some point๐
Me: *enters a room*
Me: *Exists*
The world: NOOOO NO NO NO!
๐๐๐Just kidding (hopefully)
This has got to be one of my favourites in the movie๐
#6 - When There Was Me And You
When I was younger, I thought this was the saddest most tragic thing I'd ever seen- even though I didn't understand what she was singing about because I was too young๐
Now I realise how overdramatic this is๐
But for real, Vanessa Hudgens looks so pretty in this song- she literally looks like a model๐Now I'm 17 ( about her age in the movie) and I'm in the equivalent of High School- and I look like trash๐
Anyways, the whole overdramatic thing- is another mood๐
I just laugh at it- and I find the huge picture of Troy thing- kinda creepy- like no school has that! Not in Britain anyway- and believe me if our school had a huge picture of someone blown up like that- some other kids would have drawn some questionable things on it๐๐
#7 - Bop To The Top
As a kid, naturally, I was against this because I wanted Troy and Gabriella to "win"๐๐๐
But I look back at it now and not gonna lie... It's a bop- pun was intended๐
I mean come on it's so catchy and like I said before Ryan and Sharpay are just a whole new mood themselves.
I'm overusing the word "mood", aren't I?๐
Oh well๐
But seriously their dancing is amazing in the scene like how fit do they have to be to do this? I can barely chase after the bus without almost falling over and here they are doing this next level dance routine๐
And I love all of Ryan's hats๐๐
#8 - Breaking Free
What the whole movie had been building up to๐๐
Again, I know all the words to this song and sang along with every word when they played this at prom and jumped up and down because this was MY song- as my friends put it๐๐
And we went on this really cool ride at theme park where you're like sat on swing and it lifts you up really high in the air and spin around super super fast- and I sang this song whilst I was on that ride with my friends- because we were so high up and it was windy it looked like I was crying๐
But yeah I used to dance to this song too and I thought Troy's dance moves were the coolest thing ever and I convinced myself I could dance like that- but no๐๐
I don't care what anybody says this song is iconic- all these songs are iconic actually, but this... Is just a whole new level๐
#9 - We're All In This Together
Again, I thought at some point I'd do this in secondary school with all my little buddies- but no๐๐
I tried doing the dance... But I can't dance to save my life๐๐I mean I've got the gyst of it- but that doesn't mean I'm good at it๐๐
But they also turned this on at prom and again I sang my heart out to this- we all did๐๐
And I remember I was really happy that Ryan and Sharpay turned "good" in the end๐
I'm also really grateful for all the memes that have come from this song...
When the whole class is failing the exam, type memes๐
Every single time something happens and for some reason it cause me to sing "we're all in this together..." my best friend just gives me the biggest eye roll and the biggest sigh followed on by the biggest facepalm anyone has ever seen๐
But she should be used to it, she knows if I see the chance to reference a movie- I will take that chance with both hands and reference it as hard as I can๐๐
Any last words?
Please don't judge me๐๐
If you're a Milennial or a Gen Z kid then this movie was apart of your childhood whether you loved or hated it๐๐And I was a lover๐
And writing this has got me SO pumped for tomorrow- and I'm prepared for all the eye rolls, and sighs, and facepalms, and all the:
"STOP!"๐
"Why?"๐
"How are we even friends?"๐
"I'm judging you right now"๐
"If you don't shut up-"๐
"Oh My GoD!"๐
I'm gonna get. But none the less she loves me and she knew she was gonna have to watch this movie at some point๐๐
Anyways goodbye, see you soon, and...
Thank you for reading :) <3
