Angsty Music to Help You Through a Quarantine

Besides Hole, Garbage is one of the most epic 90s female-front grunge bands. They have a sarcastic, self-effacing tone highlighted by scratchy guitar riffs and sarcastic vocals. After all, I'm only happy when it rains.

■Nirvana■

Nearly all of Nirvana's songs have an edge to them, which is much appreciated to my plaid-wearing looking-glass self. I love the fast-paced album Bleach (totally underrated), as well as the also underrated album Incesticide. Great angsty hits Include "Curmudgeon", "Milk It", and yes, "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

●Radiohead●
Radiohead has a frequently melancholic and insecure tone. Thanks to Thom Yorke's mastery, Radiohead provides an abundance of introspective and bitter tunes to listeners. The very popular songs "Creep" and "Karma Police" are great places to start, but don't forget about other angsty hits such as "No Suprises", "There, There", "I Want None of This", etc.

■Shostakovich■
Being a citizen of Russia in a historically tumultuous period, Shostakovich took to lyrical art expressing his agita. May I recommend String quartet no. 8 in C minor:

●Skeeter Davis●
Her still-famous hit "The End of the World" is self-explanatory with its somber reaction to what is presumably a non-mutual breakup.

Why do birds keep on singing? Why do these eyes of mine cry?

■Elliott Smith■

Experiencing decades of melancholy, ES shared with the world homemade, simplistic elegies with themes of disappointment and neverending misery. The movie Good Will Hunting catapulted Smith into the spotlight when it compartmentalized his ballads in their soundtrack.

●Sorority Noise●
Sadly under hiatus due to a member's struggle with mental health, Sorority Noise is an original shrieking rock group. The first tune I heard was "Blonde Hair, Black Lungs" which has beautiful screams of suffering.

■Smiths■
If "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" just isn't enough, listen to the heart-wrenching "Asleep". From the first-mentioned:

Take me anywhere, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care.

●Tame Impala●

Angsty Music to Help You Through a Quarantine

Anything off the goosebumps-worthy album Currents is worth a listen, including "Eventually" and "Love/Paranoia". There is something about this modern-style music that describes the human condition of heartache.

■Verve■
Oh, the joy of 90s alternative! Or should I say, the misery!
From "Drugs Don't Work":

All this talk of getting old/is getting me down . . .

I hope you enjoyed this compendium of personal agony.
