I had no idea it would be so good.Cobra Kai is basically the Karate Kid story told realistically. Everyone feel free to make recommendations. Because this silliness has always bothered me. You can always find good music, good television, plays, media, movies, etc. You just have to look. And this new age of streaming services has created so much good stuff. With Netflix setting the standard over a decade ago. There is Hulu, Apple, HBO, Showtime, Crunchyroll (for anime), the list is endless.

A lot of people believe Hollywood is the only place that makes movies. It's true Hollywood for a large part have become unbearable - constant remakes and no original material, one comic book adaptation after another, remaking even the same ones within a decade (Spiderman, Hulk), terrible dialogues, shitty CGI everywhere, just factory style movie production. BUT that's just Hollywood and not even all of it. Even only within the USA there's an endless production of annual independent movies of all kinds that are just amazing. And then there's like, the rest of the world - Americans are often too narrow-minded to even realize how amazing non-American movies can be. People seem to think Hollywood blockbusters is all there is to watch. And the exact same thing is true about music. People complain that they were "born in the wrong decade" and that good music is dead and I'm just like WTF? There's more good music out there than EVER. There's so much diversity of styles and just such an endless amount of different artists out there today, and all of it is super easily accessible thanks to the internet. A couple of decades ago people were dependent on what's on the radio and what they could find in record stores. Back then the best music got to the top. People who complain about music today actually mean mainstream music and don't understand that that's just a tiny fraction of what's out there. They're just too lazy and narrow minded to look deeper.
by the way. Primer was insane! Although I had to watch a 20 minute long animated explanation video on YouTube afterwards, haha. Did you watch the director's follow up movie Upstream Color?
I did not see the director's follow up. But I am a straight nerd geek squad. I love the twists and turns of that movie and how it shows just how insanely crazy time travel would be. Every other movie just has things happen simply. In reality, you would time travel before your past self realized you did. So it would be a surprise. That's why that first scene when Abe traveled was so important.
Yeah, the paradoxes of time travel are usually very lazily evaded in most movies. I adore the Back To Tbe Future movies for instance, I grew up with them, but they make zero sense in terms of the effects of time travel. Primer is a tough watch, also because of its style. But once you get into it it's an absolute psycho thriller. And it's one of the few movies that really tries to be consistent with the whole paradoxes parallel lines that are being created by time travel.
Upstream Color is very different. It's an "artsy" movie, very abstract and metaphorical. It's more like looking a beautiful painting, so don't expect another Primer!
Not really, it obviously had a much higher budget and has more of a cinema feel to it than primer. And like I said, it's very abstract and artsy. Maybe you'd hate it, maybe you'd love it!

Most of the movies and series you've posted as examples of good fare are pieces of shit. It takes a lazy mind to enjoy most of it. I haven't seen any of it, but I can tell you what I know about them. Dolmite is My Name is an Eddie Murphy tribute to a street entertainer who never made it because his act was shit. He had a cult following. Murphy is obviously one his cheerleaders. Pure trash Americana. Haywire is stunts and mindless action sequences barely held together with a think plot only there to show off stunts and mindless action sequences. OA and Last Kingdom and are Netflix continuing stories you have to be glued and handcuffed to your set to get if you can find it in yourself to care. Counterpoint is along the same lines. If you have 20 hours to stare at a screen and get involved with a story, good for you. Ditto Humans. Primer might be a good try. Maybe. The Banker might be the only good choice on the list, again, if you want to be entertained by Americana, black Americans overcoming racial prejudice to become white collar successes. Americans think their experience is a good export. It's the nature of Americans to believe it's all about them. Widows is about women carrying on the crime spree of their dead husbands who died living a life of crime. Pure Americana, again. I can see why an American would think that would make a good movie. There are good films out in the world. Most were made a lot of years ago. There is far too much crap out there and far too much crap being made.
Hunting for good shit among the bad shit is more trouble than its worth. A good movie made in the 1930s or 1940s will come up on tv late night that'll be worth watching.
Yeah, perhaps that was a little harsh. I was responding to someone calling down everyone who didn't like American movie fare. Americans love movies. It's the history. No question, Americans excel at movie making. It's an American art form, for sure. The early American cameras were heavy, and elaborate sets were created, when the centre of American movie making was in New Jersey in the teens. Movie studios in New Jersey had partial glass roofs to allow light in, with sets that resembled living rooms or offices or even the New York Stock Exchange. Giant studios could make several movies at once, as with no sound, they didn't need separate buildings, they didn't interfere with each other. Later movie making settled in California and was well-established there long before silent films. If the American silent films are watched, Ben-Hur, for example, was first a silent film- an amazing film- before it was a Charlton Heston movie- a great movie- and Napoleon, a 1927 nine-hour French film, was one of the most amazing films ever created, silent or sound. Early American films could be extraordinarily political- Birth of a Nation in 1915 was as racist as they come and it was very popular, a huge moneymaker at the time.
Meanwhile, back in Canada, documentary motion pictures were the thing, not scripted movies with actors. To an American movie-goer documentaries would seem boring. I get that. Early Canadian motion picture cameras were lighter, and early motion picture photographers used the landscape instead of sets and actors. Before the US was making films like Birth of a Nation, Canadian film makers included James Freer, a farmer from Manitoba, starting in 1897, taking what would look like YouTube videos today- he just shot film on what was happening on his farm- a document, or one of the earliest film documentaries. He expanded to documenting trains arriving at the grand Winnipeg train station and early binders working wheat fields. That's movie making, but it ain't movies! Bioscope Canada worked for the government to encourage immigration- more documentaries on Canadian life. Later, railway documentaries- funded by the CPR to get ridership and people excited about scenery they'd see, were made and farm implement dealerships (exciting, right? :) ) like Massey Ferguson, used documentaries to sell tractors and new farm equipment. Those movies were popular! In Montreal, as early as 1907 Montreal had a luxury 1,200-seat film theatre house.
The Government Motion Picture Bureau, established in the 1920s went on to create such documentaries as Lest We Forget, about veterans and war, and other great documentaries. Early Canadian film makers were all making documentaries, not movies. They included Henry Winter (out in Newfoundland before Newfoundland became a province) and James Scott in Quebec and Ontario, taking documentaries of what included loggers working in the bush. It wasn't until 1913 what could be called the first Canadian movie was made, but it was still a documentary, about the expulsion of the Acadians to what is now Louisiana- where you have Cajuns to this day.
Anyway. I could go on, but suffice to say, Americans excel at movie making, no question. That American art form has long been part of their history. I also enjoy early British films, they had some amazing movies and some great serials. Canadians excel at documentaries, that's been a long part of our history. I love documentaries.

My favourite documentary is Paperland by Donald Brittain, if you ever get a chance to watch, it's more political than most, but not nearly at the shovel-over-the-head style of Michael Moore who does documentaries but heavy-handed ones to illustrate his political viewpoint. Paperland is a film commentary without direct comment- on faceless bureaucrats of not just Canada but every nation, scenes include scores of well-dressed diplomats dancing polite dances in the great gilded halls of Austria, emphasizing these are the people who just follow orders, making sure paperwork is completed no matter how absurd the law, and ending with film of German bureaucrats, who, during war, made sure the paperwork was completed during the holocaust, those killed by the millions were transported on time by train and the killings largely documented. It's a scathing documentary but all done politely, tongue-in-cheek without cheekiness.

I like to see where the early film techniques were developed. I love documentaries and prefer them over feature films ( I rage at historical inaccuracies in movies, Argo was a historical mess, even President Carter expressed his dismay on its historical inaccuracy, and even Titanic, with James Cameron, a Canadian-born director, who took great care to make that movie as historically accurate as he could, still had Titanic survivors disembarking in New York for that Statue of Liberty scene, when in reality, Titanic survivors disembarked in Halifax) but that's the cultural difference and preference. Because it's true. Everything is over-sexualized. There's no real story, you can't have a story without any type of sexual reference, not much intelligent characters oh, and it's just the same old plot hope over and over again.
And no we're not idiots for talkin about it. Lot of times people are going on Trend and everything is too modernized. You can tell a good story without all that nonsense. I would not be so quick to make such biased opinions. There's only but few that is actually quite decent. But many shows back in the day knew how to tell a story and then have all those flashy stuff.
I don't think you really fully understand what people, let alone your audience that your basically talkin about in your question. And I will start by breaking down all of the posters of every show you placed as evidence.
I grew up with Battlestar Galactica when he used to come on on WB 11. They don't show that type of show anymore on regular cable. It was overall a decent show for my time as a child.
The good place however, is not what I would consider a decent show. With a lot of things I do not agree with especially as a Christian. So you can bet I have no desire and watching that kind of show. And they're showing a lot of subliminal messages that are quite demonic. It is still over all considered a typical television show. This generation today will naturally gravitate to it because the show was designed to make them gravitate to it. It is not appealing for somebody like me. Also, I do not have HBO anymore. Therefore I cannot watch Westworld. Even that has a lot of subliminal messages. If anything I will watch it to study it. But nothing more than that. The same with handmaid's tale as I have no access to it.
The point that I'm making is this. And this is coming from somebody who has taken film classes. Each audience ranging from my generation, your generation, my grandmother's time, my father's time, and now generation Z and Alphas time, is quite different. There have been a lot of changes in the industry since the late 90s and early 2000s. Going towards the 2010s a lot have changed and younger creators started entering the industry and have dramatically shifted the entertainment environment including the standards. There is still a lot of sexualize things and other things that shouldn't be dumped into shows and movies today that was never like that back in early 20s through the 50s. Older Generations do not like the shows and you cannot blame them. I am the age I am and I don't even like most of them. The same with most animes today and old American cartoons. I rather watch Rugrats that I grew up with, than So Called "Adventure time" or these shows now promoting feminism, homosexuality and other proprogenda. You didn't have this stuff back then. You can have relevant characters and relevant story without pushing a narrative for being so called preachy with SJW nonsense. And it's ruining good entertainment. If you can even call it that.
Uhm, you need to get off regular cable. I don't have cable. I use streaming services. And the shows there are excellent. This age of streaming is absolutely incredible.
I don't know why the Good Place would not be a good show. We were talking about shows that were not oversexualized, had interesting characters and have real stories. The Good Place is a show that deals with a topic we refuse to in Western Culture. . ."death".
Your issue is that you can't see entertainment as. . . entertainment. So how you can watch Battlestar Galactica a sci-fi series with about a totally different religious system based upon the "gods" of Caprican society while claiming the Good Place is heresy is beyond me.
I think you are better of forgoing complaining about entertainment. And just go out on your porch and watch the cars pass by.
Yeah, I don't know what shows you are talking about. I am 48 year old. I am not watching the Rugrats. Because the Rugrats do not have any real story nor do the have intelligent characters.

I do how ever enjoy old radio shows. Days before television was a awesome time. I have a very large collection of them on records, tapes and a few in MP3 format.
I did a YouTube search and I found many old time radio shows. Here is one of my favorite shows.

We are oversaturated with tv and movies and people watch far too much. I used to do this and found I couldn't pay attention to what I was watching and just watched bits of this and that. Now I do the opposite and designate a certain amount of time and a good film or tv show.
I will never understand. During my quarantine, I found fan created tv episodes and movies that were just excellent. I found independent films. I found foreign movies and tv episodes from Asia, Russia, and India. I don't understand laziness. If they claim there is nothing to watch, why not open a web browser? Is good content supposed to come find them in their bed and wake them up? You can find things just on youtube that are just stellar. And that is absolutely as lazy as I am willing to be.
But the thing is that Hollywood actors and actresses are really cool. They star in fan made stuff! The guy who played Q in Star Trek Next Gen, appears in an episode of the fan made Star Trek Continues. Nichelle Nichols appears in another series. Walter Koenig and Tim Russ are in Star Trek Renegades. They love hanging out with the fans and exploring other lore, canon and stories.
I think maybe they miss their normal shows. I know that in normal times I loved coming home and watching my weekly shows a few nights a week. blackish held strong so did a couple of others. That’s been nice.
I am going to try to sit down and watch Killing Eve one day. I tried to watch Outlander. It just moves too slowly for me. I tried watching Penny Dreadful for a minute. I forgot to mention Watchman.
It was awesome. The ending was a little disappointing. But the whole concept was next level.
