Should comedy be restricted to the groups of people they’re apart of?

Question

So in the light of all the things happening, is comedy going too far? There has been a new idea people are floating around which is comedians should only make jokes about the groups of people they’re apart of.

So black comedians can only make jokes about black people, white comedians with whites, Asians with Asians, LGBTQ with other members, etc etc. ( not even considering the fact some people belong to multiple groups, but this isn’t my idea at all).

I personally don’t think that’s a good idea because then comedy will die in my opinion and since it’s apart of the Arts , it’s something to be protected. I think the art of the attempt should be kept sacred, how we interpret it is another story.

So let’s hear it people! What do you think?

Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Jamie Foxx, Red Foxx, the Wayans clan, Dave Chappelle, Sinbad, and many other black comedians tell jokes about white people - and the audience is full of white people laughing just as hard as the black people. Who would want that to change?

Likewise, my black friends laugh at jokes about black people and aren't at all offended by them. Funny is funny. The only requirement is that you write a GOOD joke.

It's just like Hollywood. I don't want to see existing characters race or gender swapped. That's not because I don't like actors of different races or genders, but because it's lazy, pandering, and it's invariably done by people who think that such swaps exempt them from having to tell a good story. No one disliked Alien/Aliens because it had a strong female lead, nor Terminator, nor Underworld, etc. And I've seen every movie Sam Jackson, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman ever made.

Being against wokeness isn't because I'm racist or sexist, but rather because wokeness IS racist and sexist, and also lazy. It's offensive to everyone.

I think comedy should not be restricted. Some of the best jokes I have been aimed at white people and I'm white. Hell some of the best jokes are the ones that have some truth to them. I think the reason why you see so many white people trying to cancel someone Chappelle is because they couldn't handle the truth in his jokes.

Absolutely not, terrible idea! I'm totally against segregation. Mixing and mingling (and if so be it, commenting on what we see and experience) is all part of life. Got to take the good with the bad, the medicine with the sugar. And, it is only with experience that people should speak. Enough with heresy and preconceived biases. Comics talk, listen, observe, and although they are their own sort of niche, they are not so fragile as to draw lines in the sand, and who can step over into their sandbox. We could all learn something from their emotional resiliency.

I do not think all comedians are funny, and they have their own sort of sickness, needing to be on stage, constantly seeking the thrill of making people laugh or entertaining them, hearing the sound of clapping. I just watched another documentary. Whether an actor or comic, they are typically of a type. The parents told them as kids, "You always want to be the centre of attention." Even Katherine Hepburn admitted this. Robin Williams had an insatiable desire to be liked. And these needs are sometimes so powerful, they will mow down others in the process. I don't like the concept of 'pushing boundaries' for comedy's sake.

But if I have to stand on one side or the other, philosophically, I know where I stand. I do think we need social commentators. They provide a valuable service to society. Not only making us laugh, but adding levity to sometimes extremely challenging and stressful times and situations. And reminding us 'Hey... pssst... the emperor has no clothes over here...'

I would be afraid of where this path of restrictions would take us one step at a time.

Would there be a day when in historical dramas/documents, only direct descendants could play role of historical figures?
And in movies would only voted religious leaders have the permit to talk about religion?
And would every information said in TV need to be sourced by at least three independent sources and one scientific advisor?

Absolutely not. Besides that line of thinking completely destroying "professional" comedy, being able to "bust chops" and laugh at our differences among ourselves brings us together and grows understanding, friendships, and relationships. Those few Debbie Downers who are very vocal about labeling comedy (along with just about anything else) as "bullying" would never survive on a construction site.

I would not want to be a party pooper. I think we sometimes act as though fun is guilt feeling like we should not seek help for our selves. And having fun means we doing wrong. We can be very happy and be so loved that we drunk on love. But only love from my heart can be used in honesty. See i can interest in many things but a compatible woman can be awesome and bless me so much that I feel like the man I'm supposed to be. Comedy is what helps us not be too serious and lose our grip on life. Because we have very little control over most things ANYWAY. I believe you have to be a player. You just have to no that. When it comes to comedy, anything should go.

It's up to the consumers of the comedy to decide if it's something they want to consume. If someone telling a joke, is gonna be traumatized over a joke, then your problem isn't the joke.

Sometimes the best comedians are people who don't fit into any group. Comedy isn't about who has their feelings hurt anyway. Comedy by definition, is only about what's funny. If you start adding shit onto that, you're not really doing anyone any favors.
