It’s good advice in the sense it may show the kids how *ridiculous* it sounds, and create a mentality where they want to try harder next time, or take time to think more next time.
I think taking it literally is what makes it bad advice. If anything, it shows us how some things we won’t be naturally good at, so looking at everything from an outside view, we can and should determine which things will mean the most to us, so even if it’s terribly difficult, we’ll never give up if it’s something we truly value. Even if we’re not good at it, we may still do that because we have a passion for it. If we know we’re not going to be good at things that we don’t love and we don’t need, ever, then why try and waste time on it? Homer’s perspective helps others realize the need for ‘balance.’
Sometimes when we hear someone talk so negative or extreme, we try to do the opposite or we’re allowed to visualize what it would be like at that most extreme level, in particular, and then we can avoid it without actually ever going there/ getting to that point.
Its good advice when visualized/ interpreted hypothetically. It’s bad advice when taken literally.
Best advice he ever gives is to not take his advice.
I have a huge collection of quotes, that's one of my favorite by Homer, the great philosopher.
