like if they would've made prince Tiana white the whole world would've ended but its okay to make the little mermaid black

same thing with the new snow-white movie the reason she's called snow white is bc of her skin color and now she Latina.

i have nothing against black people or the Latinos I'm Mexican myself but it's so irritating when they change stuff like that like why not just make a different movie instead.

I haven't ran into a single person who is against having different princesses with different backgrounds. The problem that people are having is the race swap of such an established character. It was a lazy and racist move by Disney just so they could meet their own diversity quota. As a result they keep reigniting past racial tensions and are causing intensional division (along with the rest of the left-leaning media and brands.) Disney could of created a brand new movie with a black princess mermaid, but they didn't... why? Because they keep getting away with this kind of lazy and cheap nonsense under the banner of "diversity." It would have been a million times more impactful if Disney created a brand new black princess, but it’s pretty clear that Disney has lost their morals as well as the fact that their writers are incompetent and talentless.

“I don’t feel it is wrong for fairy tale characters to be remade for the sake of children seeing representation” is an innocent looking, but dangerous view to be advertising. Race swapping is the exact type of nonsense that trains people to be race obsessed. Do we really think children will be better off watching Disney pull these types of stunts? Children shouldn’t be taught that skin color is the only thing that matters. They also shouldn't be taught that they have to wait for representation before dreaming or pursuing something nor to let others stop them with petty reasons. At the same time having representation for all or standing up for others isn’t a bad thing either. The core issue is this divisive race swapping and reigniting racism in America especially in the next generation. That’s where the trouble lies.

I think the terrible writing and quality are terrible, but I don't think it's bad the character was made Black.

To my knowledge there isn't anything that makes the character need to be European. So her being Black isn't like it would have a massive impact on the story. It's also a story with fucking singing fish and a literal sea witch.

Frankly I like seeing less generic white people all the time. It's nice to see casts with a lot of representation and diversity - especially when those are explored alongside good writing. There's so much old media with only White people, it's nice to see more variety.

It'd be better if they got better quality writing though. Like the One Piece live action. They did a great job making a diverse cast that fits the source material.

I had no incentive to see the film, so I didn't get super worked up about it. My main thing was it didn't make sense with the source material; if I'm not mistaken, the original story was Dutch. Apparently, there were also Middle Eastern actors in it as well, so it also wouldn't have been believable.

As for Snow White? Rachel Zegler's race is the least of Disney's problems with Snow White. My three-year-old son is more coherent and rational in his temper tantrums (the few that he has; he's a good, sweet, and generally well-behaved boy) than Zegler is with her broiling and sub-childish hatred for the original film and self-entitlement.

Add on that Disney made a film that's apparently nothing more than girl-power propaganda rather than an actual fairy tale (not that there's much difference anyway at this point, but I digress) and that the dwarves have been swapped out for "mythical creatures" because Peter Dinklage whined about short people being exploited or something like that and you have a disaster in the making. Snow White will fail and I will have a great deal of schadenfreude when it does.

You are correct though. They need to just make an original story that's well-written and well-executed.

Unless the race plays a part in the story I honestly don't care people at first got upset when Miles was introduced as a new variant of spiderman and people ended up loving him the same with nick fury originally being white but now is known as being black as with most stuff I'll give it a go and depending on how it comes across make my judgment then

I personally don't care about that franchise, however in general I think its lazy to change a character rather than simpy make a new one. Why have ariel be black? Why not just have another mermaid be black? How lazy do you have to be to not be able to come up with a new name and backstory?

Case in point: Peter parker/Spider-man and Miles Morales/Kid Arachnid. Each is their own person, their own name, their own backstory and personality.

Now imagine is instead is was just White Peter Parker replaced with Black Peter Parker.

Change purely for the sake of change is pointless.

no, its just Disney's stupid woke political agenda. Just reason: why do people have black color? -> because they are from hotter regions with higher sun intensity. After 200 meters under water it is already dark.

But to get back to your argument I totally agree with you. They take old classics and just ruin them by "updating" them to what they think the modern audience wants to see. They race-swap characters, make female character's overpowered, make males either failing villains or weak goofy side characters, make the story "fair" and tasks easy to win for the protagonist. Why not come up with new characters that fill their agenda and set the focus on a good story and character arc instead of wokism?

There’s no problem at all. It’s a movie for KIDS. As a kid I loved the movie Cinderella with Brandy in it… Who is BLACK. The prince, his mother, and father were all different skin colors. And not once did I care as a child. & Guess what? There’s a movie with a white Cinderella too. People aren’t allowed to remake movies with different skin colors? I think it is fair to ask why Disney thought the change was necessary.

Changing the skin color does nothing to the story and character themselves so the movie would be the same quality if the skin color remained the same.

The only reason I can think of was to appeal to pressures external to the plot of the film, also known as tokenism.

What makes me more convinced of this reason is that we already have a black mermaid, in the same universe, but she is not Ariel. They could have had her go on her own adventure but they had to go the lazy route and change a prestablished character.

How are black people not tired of this? If I was black I would find this insulting. The implication of all this race swapping is that a black character cannot become popular unless they ride on the coattails of an already popular white character.

Little Mermaid not being white wasn't a problem. Nothing about her character was rooted in whiteness. Snow White I'd supposed to have skun as white as snow, hair as back as coal, and ruby red lips.
