Why is it that MILS and SILS are usually the problem?

MIL is short for mother-in-law in case you're wondering. I've read horror stories and seen a couple of them near my area. Most (mainly women and some men too) complained about MIL and SIL issues.

When it comes to a toxic relationship with someone's family, why are MILS generally the problem? Sometimes SILS too. I know there are FILS and BILS from hell too but not as much as MILS and SILS.

I had issues with a girlfriend's mother once too, much more than the father. Meanwhile the guy acted like a normal protective father in the beginning, he eventually came around and wasn't into no drama nor nothing. Her mother on the other hand, was too complicated, was nice to my face but talk bad behind my back, tried to convince girlfriend to break up, etc. God... I loathe that lady so much.

My MIL is the creepiest lady I’ve ever met. She’s barged in on my husband and I while we’re changing/having sex and acts like it’s completely normal. She even uses the excuse she’s already seen his body so she’s allowed. Thank god we’ve moved away from her.

That's definitely creep. I get the feeling that many of those toxic MIL can't get over that their child already has a life, that he/she are adults and don't need momma meddling in everything.
I once came to hating a past girlfriend's mother. At least the father was understandably protective in the beginning but then he came around meanwhile the mother was continued with her unacceptable behaviors. If I'm a guy and still had to deal with drama from a girl's mother... I can't imagine the poor women that have a horrible MIL.
