Parents most often think that high school is the end of their obligation to bank roll their kids. When the kid makes no moves to leave on their own, parents try to force them out gently with rent and chores... things to make them think they might as well move out.
My dad just bitched about everything I did until I had to leave. He was driving me nuts and I was only 17 when I graduated. I had my first apartment 2 weeks before my 18th birthday.
My fam did the same. Its fair to help with the bills but sometimes families go overboard and try to take financial advantage. Keep a secret savings aside
I always gave money up at home since I started earning from a paper round and washing cars. I was 12.
Know what? Best thing I ever did.. It taught me that if you look after money, it will look after you. I did it voluntarily too.
No it's not fair considering you have the money to pay that bill, it means you are doing something with your life so it's not like you deserve for them to charge you rent, what would happen if you tell them you are broke tho?
They know I don’t have a lot of money. They don’t care
Then my best suggestion is do a roommate thing and move out, after all you can probably roommate with someone and pay around the same monthly, depends on where you live obviously
Actually scratch that but perhaps a trailer, or save up for a car and live in it
I already have a car I recently bought but I live in Arizona and it’s super hot. I’ll look into a trailer thanks for your response
I hope you find something, or at the least find a better source of income 💯
Thanks 😇
If you were renting or paying a mortgage, they say it equates to 1/3 of your income.
Options would be to upskill to get a higher paying job, or negotiate with your parents. Offer services to reduce the rent... gardening, taking over the laundry, house keeping?
It is fair they charge you rent. It is up to you discuss with them what the rent covers and negotiate from there
I think it is fair. I want my daughter to save which I was not sure she may do otherwise. I would take the money save on her behalf or if she have auto deduction go to some kind of savings like 401 K or recurring account which would not let her take out money for 5 years or so without penalty I would be fine. I would be fine. I may or may not want her to know that I am saving on her behalf depends on our daily interactions.
Ask them if you can save thqt money some how or have some good reason when you like to use that money.
where you *
that is likely barely covering utilities for you, let alone food and other expenses.
You should be able to make more than 400 a month though, what is your future plans and what are you doing to work towards them?
wellacknowledging how much you makei dont think its fairi think its fair to charge you rentbut not that much if it really is such a burden then again youd be in probably a worse situation if you moved into a proper flatso idrk
so you are 22 and you are complaining that you have to pay 150 in rent a month? if you're not happy about it move out, see how the real world treats you. Im 24 and my mortgage is about 2k a month...
Yes it's fair. Be glad its 150 a month and not 800 a month elsewhere. A basic apartment in the city in my state go from scummy at 1300 to nicer at 2500.
What’s the rest of the story? You are 22 years old and only earn $400 per month. What’s the explanation?
My guess is a retailer who gives employees min hours.
Possibly something like babysitting or dog sitting.
@MzAsh you guessed it!
So why aren't you working 40 hours per week and trying to develop skills to get a job which can become a career? You are taking advantage of your parents' generosity and that is why they are charging you rent; they are trying to motivate you to do something more thn what you are already doing.
I asked my job multiple times and they won’t increase my hours. Time to look for a new job
Get your life in order. Find a better job and move out. You are way past the point where you should be a independent adult. If anything it's unfair to your parents that you are not.
You should stop wasting your hard earned money on a pit like a car. Spending 2/3 on a car is much worse than 1/3 on rent. The car should cost you less than a tenth.
You're 18. If you don't want to abide by their rules then you're old enough to move out. Get a better paying job.
You have to go to college for that though. How does she go to college and work full time to support herself. That would extend her time to graduate drastically.
@Zenit93 You do not need to go to college to get a better job. The trades pay extremely well and many do not require a degree.
@Zenit93, My entry level wage without a degree was $18/hr back in 2013. There are plenty of jobs out there that pay very well and don’t require college.
@Zenit93 I didn't go to college and I make 4-5k a month.
@Subarugirl Sure, but that’s not common. With inflation numbers being cooked, it’s harder and harder to sustain a living. People ought to be competitive with their education to get an upper hand.
@DarkWinterNights I study economics for living. That’s what I do everyday. While unique opportunities might be available, they’re far and few between when you look at the numbers. Having a degree puts you a strong advantage statistically. I encourage those to skip college who know exactly what they want to do if they also invest into assets regularly.
@Zenit93 If its worth it sure... but a bachelors degree is basically worthless these days and you're stuck with tens of thousands of dollars in debt if not hundreds.. that will take decades to pay off. You're better off getting a graduate degree in a good field or go into a trade. People push college like its the only viable option... it's not. I was making 50k a year by the time was 19, started up my own business at 20 all with out financial assistance from my parents and was single handedly supporting a family of 3. It is possible, it just takes work.
@Subarugirl I’m a numbers guy. Anecdotal success stories do not change the income level disparity between educated and non-educated as an entirety. I’d wage to say some degrees don’t provide much utility for the free market, but many do. A bachelors in accounting, engineering, or computer science for example are highly utilized and are therefore lucrative.
I’m deviating from my point though. I think OP could save that 100 a month to invest or work on her own entrepreneurial ventures. I support that as well.
I’d wager*
No they don't. Most of the jobs in trades don't pay that much. This is backwards logic. You need a degree to get a good job. Once you're done with college you need experience to make at least 60k. In this economy and due to inflation even a salary of 60k might not even be enough. Most jobs in the trades hardly make anything above 50 - 60k. That's fine temporarily but later in life 50 - 60k isn't enough
@metaldragon563 look, the point is that the OP indicated she's unhappy having to pay rent to her parents in order to remain living in her childhood home as a legal adult. She's able to make the adult choice to move out. Moving out has consequences. She likely won't be able to afford the same standard of living as her established parents.
My parents each make 6-figures. My first "real person job" paid $27,000.00/year. I could not afford my parents $200K+/year lifestyle but if I didn't want to abide by their rules as an adult then I had to make it work to live on 27K. That's just math. Decisions have consequences. You don't like X so you're left with Y and you gotta make that work.
1. Are they tying to teach you Responsibility or 2. Are they trying to Observe how you will face challenges if incase you have rented a house.
Also, as long as you live that house you must at least take responsibility in helping in house in terms money. I believe if you do this they won’t take rent from. This is because they will see how you so helpful financially to them.
Finally: Seek an advice from your GRANDPARENTS if only they are still alive
They’re preparing you for the real world. They are doing you a favor, believe me. Once you become an adult, they are no longer legally responsible for you. It might seem harsh right now, but coddling your adult child is detrimental to both you and them. I’m sure they provide you with food, and list of other things. So in conclusion, no, a small amount of rent for an adult kid is not unreasonable.
Since you live under their roof, you have to play by their rules. Your options are to move out which you can't afford to do and you can ask them for anything but they're not obligated to do any of it
Such people should not make kids. Kids did not ask you to be born. You are their parent forever not till they become 18. I personally think kids should be supported till they are financially settled down
I dont know. I am not western. In our culture this is seen as a big no
I especially would not to do that to my potential daughter. No wonder why western kids dont want to look after their parents
Yeah in the east parents don't ask their kids to pay rent
Move out thenPersonally, I wouldn't pay considering a. I've company in my house b. I've deal to deal with family drama. But I guess it's somewhat fair. Moving out is advisable
I’ll consider that thankyou!
I pay £100 a week, plus other bills like Internet, and use to pay the vet bill (s), sometimes gas and electric, and food.
This will help you grasp the concept of 'Real world' living!
Thankyou!!
Welcome!
If you have a job, it's fair to be paying your parents rent. If you don't like it, move out and live on your own.
Hi, don't be sad. They are teaching you a lesson. Don't complain. Beg them to reduce it and let them know of your plans for a better future. Parents often love their children. Personally, I think they are giving you tough love.
Thankyou!!
If you have not graduated from high school yet, and are getting decent grades, perhaps you could convince them too let you get your diploma before charging you rent.
you are 24 go out and get yourself a job and have your own place and learn to cook, clean, pay your own way and show people that you can do it.
You’re getting off EASY‼️ Get a second job lazy…your 22 year old pussy. OMG 😱
😱
😱
😱
That’s mean 🥲
Waaaaa. 😪 To your Momma if she even cares you pussy. REALLY 🤷🏻♂️
Says the weirdo talking shit behind a screen lmfao. I’m not lazy I work my ass off. Byeeeee
Its not fair. I don't understand this. Are they trying to recover the cost of raising you? Aren't parents supposed to look out for their children? In my culture parents don't ask children for rent even when they become adults.
So if that is true why would they ever move out? You aren't doing your kids any favors in the long run.
In my culture families are close knit. We have bigger houses in general. My parents did what the could for me. Repaying parents doesn't have to be monetary.
Welcome to being an adult. You need to try and get more hours, a second job or a different job all together. Most places if not all would charge you more for rent than you make in a month and would non-negotiable.
Look at it this way, if you moved out and had roomies, than you'd be paying a lot more on food and utilities.
Maybe you need to look for a better paying job?
I’ll look into it thanks for your response 😇
You’re welcome.
I live with my parents and pay toward rent, I give them more than that though.
It's still less than you'd have to pay if you were on your own.
I would suggest getting a second or higher paying job though.
Thanks ☺️
They are entitled to charge as much as they want. Its your choice to stay, you could move.
Wow! This looks like a very Western concept. I find it unfair.
Of course it is fair. Life isn’t free or fair. Your parents wouldn’t be doing you any good making you falsely think it is.
Oh dear. You're still not getting it. Will you be a total failure for your entire life? Or just a little while longer? We're dying to know...
That’s mean lol 🥲
Wah fukkin wah. Get a goddam clue. Even better, GET YOUR OWN PLACE. Problem solved.
I did. My mom was untenable. So I moved out at 17, bought my first house when I was 19.
Declare your independence - DO IT YOURSELF.
You're an adult, so yes it's fair. If you dont agree to the terms of the household, get a better job and move out.
Thanks!
Can't tell if what you said was sarcastic or not, but 400$ a month is just bad. I make more on my part time job that I have on the side of university.
I wasn’t being sarcastic I appreciate your response. I agree 400$ is shit. My job won’t increase my hours. I’m currently looking for a new job
Are you going to school FT? If not then you should be paying your share. And where else could you find rent for $150, with utilities presumably included?
When I lived with my parents for a time as an adult, I paid them $600 a month.
"I’m only making around 400$ a month from my job"
I found the issue. Get a better job
1/3rd sounds about right. I make 5200 a month and pay 2k in rent
It's totally fair. You're an adult and €150 is very cheap for somewhere to live. Maybe you should be looking at better paid jobs
is that all out of 400 my mum would have wanted 250 to 300
Thanks for your input 😌
Yes, a lot,
Thay are trying to teach you a lesson which you already know or dont.
But its a life lesson.
You should appreciate them and live peacefully.
My parents are wealthy and live near school but I still work and pay my own apartment because it's my responsibility as a college adult. Be glad that you are so lucky to get such cheap rent and parents who let you stay with them
😊 thanks
I think it's fair for you to pay something but for $150 a month they should get the hell out of your house. But I think they are just encouraging you to move out, which is fine. You're an adult after all.
You need to get a different job or another job and work more unless you are going to school.
Maybe u need to get on welfare.
Yeah, mine were talking about the same. 150 is actually quite cheap. I moved out instead though.
The better question is why you only make 400.
Your parents are 100% correct. You should get educated and motivated to get a higher paying job and then move out.
I don't know my parents never asked from me to pay rent. There have been only a few times when they couldn't pay the bills or something and asked me to pay them but this happened like 2-3 times.
They are teaching you that life is expensive and if you want to succeed, you will need to further your skills or education.
They are doing the right thing
400 a month at 22? My parents charged me 400 for rent at 22. Get your shit together. Your parents are doing the right thing and pushing you to make more. I think they should charge more
Extremely fair. You are supposedly an adult. Act like one.
My parents charged me rent too. I think it’s good for your adults to have this. Live is not a free ride.
Yes its fair welcome to the real world where nothing is free.
Ok thankyou !
Yes, it's fair. If you don't want to be charged rent, live on the street, because everyone else has to pay to stay somewhere, even if they own the place (property taxes).
So why don’t you find a better job? Or a full time job that’s 40 hours a week?
Average rent should be about 1/3 of your wages. You're a big girl, you can handle it. Welcome to being an adult. If you don't like whst you make, get a different job.
Rent *should* be 1/4 of your wages but that’s not how things are anymore.
Rent is usually between 1/3 and 1/2 of your entire wage. So yes it’s fair.
My rent is 1800 a month and I make 4000 a month.
Thanks for your response 🥰
Damn, $1,800 for rent for (what I assume) is a one-person place? Also, $4,000 a month is $48,000 a year, which is way more than what the average American makes ($36K). Are you sure you're qualified to be giving financial advice? It sounds like you're wasting money, yourself.
@MCheetah Sadly 1800 is the cheapest rent you will find in Ontario. Most one bedroom apartments are 2400 a month. I managed to get lucky and my rent was grandfathered in and can only go up a certain amount each year.
I don’t waste money. I actually almost never spend money on myself except food and bills.
But, I am not giving financial advice. I am merely stating that most peoples bills are cut the same in relation to what the posted stated.
Okay, understandable. Back in Philly, I had a four bedroom apartment just one mile from City Hall (so
downtown, basically) that was $1,400 a month total. It was in the Spring Garden neighborhood. With roommates, I could pay as low as $350 a month for my own bedroom. Ontario isn't even that great of a city, from my understanding. Might be another San Francisco, although I always heard Toronto was even worse.
After your 18 your Parents can legally demand rent if your living in their house.
You cannot do much unless you move out.
Amazing how immature todays young people are — 100 years ago, men were men and took care of themselves at 18 — their own job, house etc. and didn’t cry about it being unfair. Men are starting to act like women so much that they want to become women
150 a month is nothing, I paid 3 times that to rent a room in the 90's. Go get your entitled bum ass a real job and grow up for fucks sake.
If you are a full time student, then sorry I'm a fucking asshole haha
Trying to rent an entire apartment to oneself now with 450 bucks is impossible here in the West. Unless it's in the ghetto or a more remote community lol.
Sounds like your parents are that big of a failure that they have to take money off of their own child just so they can make ends meet. If they where financially stable then they wouldn't be charging you rent.
They are financially stable which is why it made me question it
Congrats! You win the Dumbest Response Award for this question.
