If he's trained in some form of self defense?

that depends on what that person is good at. unattractive people or those who are perceived to be unattracted have always struck fear into the hearts of many people even by other unattractive people. it's just human nature.

according to the unfortunate laws of nature, unattractive people are suppose to be at the bottom of the barrel, the literal scum of the Earth who are meant be hated, bullied, ostracized, ridiculed, sometimes hunted down for their mere existence. they shouldn't exist because they "contaminate" the world with their presence.

human beings have an innate need for safety while preserving what is "beautiful" which is why society gets outraged when a kitten or puppy is killed but no one gives a shit when a spider or a shark is killed. a good-looking person who suffers a tragedy will get lots of mourns and sympathy. a ugly-looking person wouldn't even make the News.

Especially if he's in better shape?

definitely because now he has the tools to fight back and not be controlled or be a slave to the status quo. people who were used to holding a power advantage over him, bullying him, picking on him, getting away with doing shitty things to him will now think twice and that's very troublesome for them.

he was already feared by women before he had any tools to begin with. this time it's the men who he strikes fear into.

ugly + kindness = manipulative
ugly + flirting = creepy
ugly + skills = dangerous

you get the point. that's how the Devil Effect works. it's naturally ingrained into our biases no matter how much we'd like to deny it.
