Why do adults who think spanking kids is okay not think spanking themself would be okay?

Got into an argument with one of my brothers about this. He thought spanking was good for kids because it taught them respect. I asked if he got pulled over for something and the cop spanked him, would that make him have more respect for cops and the rules of the road? Obviously he said no and called it a ridiculous comparison. He didn't explain why it was ridiculous though he just got angry and embarrassed and left the room.

Both situations there's an authority figure and a person who broke a rule and so gets punished. Why is it okay and teaches the child respect to spank them, but not okay and only makes adults angry and embarrassed? Wouldn't it be the same for both—either both children and adults it is good to spank and teaches respect, or both children and adults it is bad to spank and just makes them angry and embarrassed?

With the exception of two consenting adults in the bedroom (that's different), I'm against spanking kids or anyone as a way of enforcing your authority or rules over them. You're still hitting a child, which is the complete opposite of teaching.

Teaching is guiding through examples, actually being patience, helping them in the right direction. If you lose your temper and have to resort to spanking, you lost. The child didn't learn the real reason of why their behavior wasn't good, just that you'll hit them for it, nothing else.

I got spanked not too much and certainly nothing hard. I think that spanking kids doesn't teach respect but teachers kids to hurt others. I like your analogy 😀 I think your brother knew you were right and that's why he got embarrassed and left.

Thanks, I hope so. We were both spanked too but he's always taken our parents side about it.

While I believe that obedience and discipline are very important I don't think spanking is an effective way to achieve it. You want your kids to respect you not to fear you to the point that they're afraid of asking you something or telling you something because they know you'll get mad. I think that grounding your kids and lecturing them and making them think of what they did is a more effective way to show them they were wrong.
