My friend says I "always" one-up her. I listened to her POV and asked for examples of when I one-up her, and she said it's when I say things like:
Her: You're beautiful
Me: You're beautiful inside and out, bestie!
I can see how that could be seen as one-upping by her, but I sincerely don't intend to one-up her or make her feel inferior. I was trying to give her a compliment that would make her feel good about herself. I truly meant that compliment.
How can I convince her that it's not my intention to one-up her?

You’re not the only one she feels is one upping her. My best friend of 10+ years says the exact same things and she always thinks women are more beautiful and better than her. But it’s because she struggles with insecurities and depression, always has. All you can really do is compliment her back, encourage her to get therapy and leave it alone. Mainly because what you should never have to do is downplay yourself to make anyone else feel better. You can’t convince her that she’s beautiful, or good enough or valuable, it’s inner work she has to do on her own, possibly with professional help. I’d say leave it at that.
Because she see yu as competition
she sounds insecure
