Should people stop automatically assuming someone is married just because they have a child?

I was visiting my dad, who had major surgery in the hospital. He is still not out of the woods when one of the staff members randomly asks me if your husband is at work, and I say no, he is not around. She then says, Oh, I thought that was your husband with you yesterday, and I say no, that's my brother.

This same lady also asked about giving my daughter a sibling, and I said no, and she was there, saying maybe someday. The whole conversation made me feel very uncomfortable, especially when she was asking me these questions and saying about giving my daughter a sibling someday, all while my dad was there laying on the hospital bed in a life-or-death situation.

So should people stop assuming someone is married just because they have a child?
