Believe it or not, this sort of thing does happen. For instance, if the "best friend" (or whoever) needs to get pregnant but she either doesn't have a man or her man is infertile but she doesn't want to go the IVF root.

Lesbian singer Melissa Etheridge and her at-the-time partner Julie Cypher sort of did that. Famed (and late) musician David Crosby fathered two children for them, Beckett and Bailey Cypher. It was Crosby's wife Jan Dance who suggested it to Etheridge. However, being celebrities, they could afford IVF, so that's what they did; neither Melissa nor Julie got down and funky with David Crosby. Julie Cypher carried and birthed the kids.
