Well let's think of it in terms of the animal world (here I am equating humans to animals because that is my belief)
In the animal kingdom the female often goes after the alpha male because he can provide for her and her progeny. Extapulating this to humans how are our "alpha males" determined. In todays society it is all about wealth, and social standing, we don't really have a need for the male to be "stronger" than the rest of the males because we have evolved past that. Nowadays social standing is either based off of your proffesion or aquiantances. If you have multiple friends that means you are likely better at getting along with others, a better speaker, more comfortable with yourself, and are more than likely going to have a positive outlook on life as a whole.
That was in answer to you topic question as for the rest, it is a bit of a double-standard, but it is understandable, males do not need to look for security in a partner, instead we tend to look for women who are going to be loyal (if a girl has multiple guy friends it is often misconstrued that she is sleeping with them) and we look for appearances
SO my overall answer (in case you didn't read) is that it is based off primal instinct

I don't know. Women will like you having friends because of these reasons
1. To try to hook their less fortunate friends up
2. Someone else to cry to if the relationship isn't going the way the woman wants or expects it to.
3. So they can say "you're always going out with your friends!"
I've never had a problem with a guy not having a ton of friends. I like knowing a guy has at least one friend who he can trust - it just speaks well of his ability to be somewhat sociable, but I don't write them off if they don't have any friends because I know how it goes. Especially as you get older, if a guy is single while all his peers are running towards marriage or families, you can be that odd man out so naturally you'll be more of a loner in your age group.
I've only ever considered a guy a loser if he was a jerk to everyone without a good reason. Not because of the amount of friends he has.
I actually really like guys better if they have little or no friends! Since they are easier to talk to and I can get to know them better. Honestly, I don't have many friends either so why should I judge a guy on how many friends he has if I only have 3 to 4. Make no sense, I agree with you, but people in this world are just weirdoes and idiotic!
Thats not necessarily true.. If he has no friends but he's still friendly, attractive and approaches a girl I would still talk to them. Its just that most guys that have no friends are werid and anti social

This is acutally because lower social standing is a sign of many, many problems in humans and social standing often is easily dictated externally by just looking at the social circle of the person in question. The fewer the friends the MORE LIKELY they are socially awkward or inept and lack any value from that standpoint. It doesn't make them poor but it does make them poor communicators and therefore poor parents as well as poor partners.
I don't have many male friends all of the ones I do have like to brag and bitch about women they hooked up with and it gets kind of boring to listen to. As for my female friends most of them don't really hang out, they have lives and boyfriends, they will send an occasional text, fb, or email message to me.
I am not really sure if women care or not about how many friends you have, no girl I ever talked to even brought it up as an inssue. Most guys want you to engage in "their" interests more often than they engage in yours. So, a girl who is a loner or shy may love having a guy who isn't dragging her to social events. But a girl who is social will miss having social interactions.
Also, outgoing girls are often sought by men. Guys just may not realize that bubbly, vivacious girl that charms everyone isn't any prettier than the shy, awkward one sitting by herself.I guess the concept behind this is Social Proof
