I used to love watching the cartoon, Recess. It took that cliche concept of the high school cafeteria being segregated by your affiliations, i.e., nerds, jocks, cheerleaders, etc, and brought it down to the elementary school level with literal playground politics. It's fun to sort of imagine what these kids would look like as adults and what they would be wearing that would be true to their style which didn't change all that much during the show. It's also fun to gender bend and switch up their race (mainly because I couldn't find exact pictures, lol) with fashion and see what the characters would look like if they were anyone on the street.
Vince Lasalle: Athletic, egotistic, competitive.
Clothing: To take on the roll of Vince, you'd need to wear athletic gear, all day, every day. He's always ready to compete day or night and his fashion reflects that. Vince probably wouldn't ever be in a suit or any sort of restrictive clothing (for long anyway) that wouldn't allow him to beat you at a quick game of basketball or a sprint down the sidewalk.
Ashley Spinelli: Tough, tomboy, stubborn
Clothing: With Spinelli there is a juxtaposition between hard and soft. At moments on the show, you see her vulnerability, but she covers that up a lot with violence and her need to be tougher than everyone else. You'd wear a skirt, but with leggings underneath, or if you had a bow in your hair because you were forced to wear one, you'd also be wearing your combat boots to let people know, you're still ready to kick a-- if need be. As a guy, you'd wear your leather to illustrate your tough guy exterior all the time.
Mikey Blumberg: Friendly, kind, polite, cheerful, peaceful
Clothing: Mikey is milktoast. He's so super sweet and everyone's friend, and a total peace maker. His clothes, much like a monk, are plain and functional. No fuss and no muss. Wearing anything above this level of planeness would be overwhelming to his sense of minimalist style. Stick to earth tones, and basic pieces.
T.J. Detweiler: a leader, sarcastic, trouble maker, ditzy, lazy, warmhearted, and friendly
Clothing: TJ is the all around every man. He's a tshirt and jeans kind of guy, but if the mood strikes him, he'll wear whatever is necessary to complete one of his schemes. A little experimenting with style is good, but he would always revert back to the basics.
Gretchen Grundler: genius, friendly, helpful, sweet
Clothing: a nerd through and through, she's more concerned with her brains than focusing on fashion. She's the type that would probably wear whatever was cleanest at the time of dress. Simple is best for following in Gretchen's saddle shoed footsteps.
Gus Griswald: good natured, naive, paranoid, power hungry
Clothing: Gus comes from a military family, so his clothes are meant to reflect that with the army greens, buzzed cut, and buttoned up look he's always sporting. His fashion never really relaxes that notion that he has to be ready...for what, we don't know, anytime, and anywhere including his grabs for any power he can get being small and picked on a lot.
The Ashleys: clique of four fashionable, snobby, and spoiled girls
Clothing: if you're obsessed with fashion, the Ashleys would be your go to for style. They all have to maintain their superiority over the other peasants and poor kids on the playground by looking pristine, color coordinated, and fashionable at all times. They're like superheros without any actual super powers. As long as you're wearing something no one else has and it's expensive, you're good.
