If my partner felt uncomfortable with what I wore for whatever reason, I would prefer if he told me so we can address it together. That doesn't mean I'm going to pat his head, tell him I understand and go change. The way I dress is something that I consider to be a possible depiction of my personality. If I'm going out with the girls, I'm going to want to look jaw-dropping. Not because I crave validation or because I want the eyes of the opposite sex on me but because I CAN dress-up if I want to, experiment new looks and get opinions on what works and what doesn't.
What I would do to appease my partner is simply try and get him to understand that I'm dressing up for one person and one person alone: ME. I don't expect him to like it or agree with it but I do expect him to respect that. A relationship, to me, is based on mutual trust, respect and communication. I'll know that our relationship is strong if my deciding to look good or whatever else does not make him feel uncomfortable or suspicious. The same goes for if he randomly decides to deck himself up.

I think a more valid question, from a mans point of view, is why would you dress "sexy" for a girls night out in the first place? If most guys are going out with their mates they'll just wear whatever, they're not going to make some kind of special effort to look "hot" - unless they're going somewhere where there'll be women and they're hoping to get lucky...

That's not a totally symmetrical comparison though, since men are the more visually stimulated gender. A man gets dressed up to look "sharp" and like he "belongs" in the venue he's visiting. Women get dressed up to look "sexy" (ie: sexually attractive = attracting sexual attention). So critisising a man's dress choice is hardly an equal point of reference-- his motivations are intrisincally different in what he wears on a night out.
case in point: ever heard a woman critisise her man for "showing too much skin" on a night out with his buddies?
