Because black Americans are more racist than any other culture in the world.
I literally tried to rent a room in a mansion to my black friend for $150 a month. Way less that I was paying for a way smaller room.
He robbed me, thretened me with a gun, and then literally burned the house down (probably by accident)
Black Americans are raised to hate white people, even though slavery ended over 100 years ago. They don't care if you wear dreads. They have learned that ganging up to hurt white people means they don't have to work like the rest of us do.
Claiming racism is a lie. They know it's not racism for you to have dreadlocks. But the more they about racism the more the Democrats take my money and give it to them to try to buy a voter who can't think for themselves.
I don't think most people do it on purpose, but culturally, black people are raised to attack white people for anything and everything they can because it gets them ahead without them having to actually do any work.
White people aren't racist anymore. I tried to help the black people I knew more than I would have helped a white person because I felt like they had an unfair start. Turns out I was wrong. They were doing fine. They had felony records because they were felons and the government gave them $10,000 in PUA while I got nothing because they literally didn't have jobs to begin with 🤦🏼♂️
Unfortunately, there is nothing white people can do about it except to stop pandering. Wear your hair how you want. If someone says you can't because your white tell them to fuck off and eat dirt. That's racist. Black people attacking white people for being white is the norm now. I tried to get along, but they just honestly don't want to.
It's really sad, but they literally burned my house down because they thought they deserved it for free because they were black. BLM literally does that on the regular.
They will make any excuse they can to attack white people and say we are the racist ones. Even things as ignorant as telling white people they can't wear their hair how they want.
Just block them or ignore them and live your own life. It's not worth trying to fix a made up problem. They just want to start trouble with whoever they can.

Complaining about cultural appropriation is one of the dumbest things I can think of.
People have been learning and borrowing from other cultures forever. Are we supposed to think pasta, chili, coffee, coco, silk, fireworks or men's power suits are cultural appropriation? How is it cultural appropriation for other cultures to wear Levis, cowboy hats and cowboy boots, or any number of subculture fashions? What about ancient Celtic or Germanic designs? Who invented plaited or braided hair? And who invented tattoos? Are non-Africans allowed to play blues music? Are musicians not allowed to be influenced by forms of music that originally evolved in different parts of the world?
What's wrong with admiring clothing or jewelry styles from around the world and honoring them by wearing them? It's homage, not theft. I think of it more like fusion, like fusion foods. It adds richness to our experience.
Purists make me sick. They are anti-progress.
I think those who talk about cultural appropriation are racist or ethnocentric. They are full of hate and trying to justify it by claiming a victimhood that most of them never personally experienced. Instead of promoting the idea that we are all members of the human race, they want to divide us.
They aren’t just a hairstyle, and styles like braids weren’t made for white people hair. their hair is going to fall out eventually or stop growing.
People are defensive because most white people reject the history that comes along with these cultural hairstyles and disregard them as “just hairstyles” they aren’t just hairstyles. A ponytail is just a hairstyle, space buns are just a hairstyle but black people care for their hair a lot. In Africa your hairstyle can literally tell people if your married, your status, etc.
It’s held with high regard in Africa and because of that black people are uncomfortable with white people taking our hairstyles, without paying homage to the culture that it came from in the first place. Most white people will just get the braids cause they think it looks “trendy” despite the fact that many black people will actually get the hairstyles to protect their natural hair but weren’t allowed to wear their own cultural hair to the workplace until the CROWN act because our cultural hair was seen as unprofessional.
Braids and dreads are for black hair only. This’ll probably get hella hate, but idc. This is my black ass opinion and I want to gate keep my culture, white girls can find something else to go colonize 😂

Please read and then maybe you can see why it is offensive when white people wear these styles for edginess. It is different if a culture is being celebrated for an event or something, but to steal a style from a culture and claiming it to be yours, 1. Without giving credit to that culture, and 2. knowing it is offensive and doing it anyway just to be “cute” or “cool” is not okay.
It’s crazy because I used to be able to look up “cute braid styles” on Google and see a plethora of black hairstyles but now I look it up and it’s mostly white people at the top so I have to search “braided hairstyles for black women”. It’s a sad thing in my opinion. Braids once belonged to our culture but in a couple hundred years little to no one will know.

There’s a difference between freedom of expression vs cultural appropriation vs cultural appreciation.
Freedom is expression is fine as long as you’re not stealing another culture and claiming it as your own.
Cultural appropriation is when you are in fact taking another culture than your own and claiming it yours by not giving credit to the origin.
Cultural appreciation is when you’re using another culture and spreading knowledge about it’s origin and not claiming it your own.
To understand this better:
Imagine having your grandma’s secret recipe and ingredients for a cake. This secret recipe is SO VALUABLE to you and your family, right? Your grandma made it herself. It was her secret recipe and ONLY your family knows specifically that recipe for that specific cake.
Let’s say one day that recipe was stolen, okay? Then that recipe is distributed everywhere around the world. Everyone LOVES the cake’s recipe but doesn’t know the origin. Nobody seems to care, they just know the cake is delicious and they claim that recipe is theirs. Disrespecting THE REAL originator (your grandma) and their family (your family). While others are getting awards, pictures, and media attention for your grandma’s cake NOBODY is giving you and your family credit for that secret recipe.
When you style your hair like dreds or another style from another culture WITHOUT giving credit and spreading awareness of where that hair style came from, you are as good as the people who stole your grandma’s secret cake recipe.
To answer your original question to cure this problem you must research the origin of where and who wore dreds first. Give credit to those who originated it first, when it started, which country it came from, who was the originator, etc. LEARN about it first. This way when anybody on the street or the internet calls cultural appropriation you can easily spread awareness of its origination and knowledge about it.1. Many BW feel they can't have anything to themselves. They think if they create something, here comes a WW to claim it as there's and take it away. Here's an example, BW have worn bonnets for years, but a WW created a brand of bonnets and got recognition for creating this "new" and "Innovative" product, which clearly wasn't. BW are also deemed "ghetto" for wearing braids, etc., but when a WW does it's viewed as cute and high fashion (the media's fault in my opinion)
2. As others have mentioned, it's simply not healthy for fine hair. It's not healthy for our hair if it isn't properly maintained.
3. From my understanding, Sari's are a traditional dress for Indian culture, not something they wear simply because it's "cute". There's meaning behind it. So, when you were it just because you think it's "cute" they view it as disrespect toward their culture, and I would assume that goes for anything else that has a cultural significance behind it.
There is are differences ebetween epoints 1&3: cultural significance and tradition. Most BP don't wear braids for these reasons, we wear it to protect our hair, grow it longer, and/or to be stylish. Some BP wear "for the culture".
I'm a BW, and I speak only for myself when I say this: idc if WP wear braids or dreads. I used to, but there are more important things in life to focus on. So, go for it! I won't speak on Saris, bcus I don't think it's my place. Just be respectful of the people who inspire you.Because everyone can appropriate white cultures because duh what cultures? We don't have any cultures. But God forbid a white person wears something typically associated with any other group of people.
But seriously - if you want to use clothing from some culture that is an everyday typical clothing then that's ok. But if you're trying to use an element that has a cultural/religious significance then you shouldn't.
For example - if you want to wear traditional Native American shoes and you're not Native yourself then that's ok because that's a normal thing for people to wear. It's not associated with anything specific and important to them, it's just shoes. But if you want to wear feathers that symbolise some kind of achievement then you shouldn't because to them those mean more than just a simple decoration. Similarly with other cultures, if it's a type of clothing reserved for special occasions or ceremonies then don't use them outside of those intended purposes. But everyday type of wear? If anyone has a problem with that, then it is THEIR problem, not yours. My opinion is that the biggest problem with society right now all cultures and races is the inability to see and appreciate each other for our differences and appreciate and not feel so threatened by things that are different or that we don't understand. Communication is key we are easy to notice things that other people do that make us uncomfortable while being blind of the things that we do that make others uncomfortable. We rely and pass along and adopt and accept ĺinformation without verifying or fully understanding the significance of it. We go into situations ready to defend our ways of life ignorantly without being open to understanding that therer are other ways to live life that are equally as positive and fulfilling possibly better we could learn. We should be also be mindful and understand that perception is reality until the truth is discussed and mutually acknowledged and agreed upon. It may seem strange but reality has as many forks in it as there are people that witnessed and now perceive it.
For one it’s not made for their hair. It’s not so much you can’t have box braids cause you’re white it’s more like your hair is gonna fall out cause it can’t handle kanekalon… sams with dreads. Their hair is so oily naturally , they have to wash it constantly. It’s a whole process with dreads that’s why they end up with mold in their hair. But let’s be real black women are trend setters and seeing something we have been doing or wearing for years being claimed as a new trend by a white woman is frustrating. Nothing wrong If you appreciate it just don’t claim it as your own and most white women put on this ghetto facade as soon as they get some braids. Just be yourself.
I would agree people get hurt over anything but you have to look deeper as to why. As you mentioned it's OTHER people's culture, not the white person. Since the longest people that practice their cultures are always down upon from generally white people. There are rules in place in the workforce that stop people from practicing their cultures. There have been black females that are told they can have their hair a certain why and some were forced to change it. So how do you think they would feel that when they practice something that is natural to them it is seen as ugly, not normal, and frowned upon, BUT when a white person does it, all of a sudden its accepted, it's beautiful and it becomes a trend, then you have people that try to profit off of something that does not belong to them. Its one thing to have ideas but its another thing to grab someones culture and use it for your own good.
It wouldn't be a big deal if the people from the culture that was being appropriated didn't have social backlash for wearing the style that belongs to their culture. For example, when black women want to wear their hair in cornrows they have trouble when they're at work but when a white girl does it she's considered fashionable and edgy. Same hairstyle different race different outcome. This is the issue that we as black women, cause let's not act like this isn't about our hairstyles, have with people "appropriating" our hairstyles.
We don't give a crap if some white girl wants to put her hair and braids. What we give a crap about is the fact that when we wear our own hair in our own style is considered unprofessional but when they do it it's considered fine. We're sick of the double standard not the quote-unquote appropriation.1. Anyone can get dreads. If your hair is not combed, dreads can form.
2. It does serve cultural and spiritual meanings but if you want dreads, then have dreads. This is coming from a black dude by the way.
3. Just don't be offensive with them my guy, watch videos about it and people from the actual culture will give your opinion. I think us [ethnicity]-Americans get a little too hung up in what's ours when the ancestors before us and people of other cultures now just want peace and togetherness than just separate. Like do you you how awesome it is to feel like your culture is cool in the eyes of a foreigner or something like that?@pink_and_inlove - "short Chinese traditional dress ". Legitimate traditional Chinese dresses worn by RESPECTABLE women are long.
On the other hand traditionally yueji - aka prostitutes, whores, women for hire, sluts, women of no respect, women viewed of little to no value, street workers, etc - would wear shorter outfits hence the justified dislike of some dimwitted non-Asian wearing something improper.
And that is why taking on other's culture when you're ignorant & uneducated about it makes such behavior incredibly offensive. .- s
I think there is a hyper sensitivity when it comes to things people think of as their identity whether it be cultural or otherwise. If done respectfully, I don't really begrudge anyone of any race of doing it. Where it becomes a problem is when those displays become a parody of those traditions.
Examples:
¹people basically making fools of themselves by mocking stereotypes of those with Irish heritage on st Patrick's day
²anyone who uses blackface regardless of the reason
³people slapping on a Sombrero and speaking bad Spanglish on Cinco de Mayo
I think you get the general idea and if you are one of those people and think, "oh it is just harmless fun" then grow the hell up. Yeah nowadays tons of things are called cultural appropriation.
I don't agree. I call most of them cultural appreciation.
'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery', they say. (Although it's usually said to appease someone who's just had someone stolen from them.)Of course it isn't.
Anyone can wear their hair however they wish.
It is irrelevant if a clothing style or hair style was established in a certain region of the earth and primarily one ethnic group wore it. They don't "own" it. Anyone can wear anything or choose any style they want. It doesn't mean anything.
Only psychos and irrational people believe only one race is allowed to use X hair style and if anyone else wears it they've committed some crime.
Their fascist psychos. Tell them to kiss your ass and to mind their own freaking business.Because you all literally steal everything from every race and pay no homage. You literally call us ghetto for having long braids and then turn around and wear our braids. Hannah's braids are seen as stylish to the white people but when latrice wears them the whole office calls her ghetto.
I don't know either - genuinely, I use a lot of Japanese, Latin and Greek stuff regarding not only clothes. That's why we have globalisation, so you can do whatever you want if it doesn't hurt someone in any way. Wear what you want and have any style that suits you. After all, one example is a certain black samurai ;) He wore traditional armour and weaponry and he was viewed as their equal - in that era!
People are not tolerant, but that's okay - the only thing you have to do is to ignore them ;)It's these SJWs and their 'cultural appropriation'. Which is just racial-segregation-with-extra-steps.
A multicultural society should allow anyone of any ethnicity to take an interest in someone elses culture. If someone gives you a hard time for having dreads, just call them the racists they are and ignore them. Not to offend anyone but cultural appropriation doesn't offend me. I love seeing others celebrate Middle Eastern culture, coming from the Middle East myself. And it pisses me off when other girls say 'you can't belly dance you're not Middle Eastern' for example.
No, our culture is awesome and I'm glad you're enjoying it![This is my opinion, we dont have to agree]
There's a difference between appreciating culture and appropriating it.
Appreciation: Like if there's a festival and you put on ethnic attire and understand the significance it has.
Appropriation: taking an ethnic attire and claiming it as your own (and profiting off of it) and basically disregarding the people belonging to that culture.
Wearing certain pieces of ethnic clothing for Halloween or prom can be offensive because for POC its not a costume that they can take off. Its their lives and experiences.
The problem is:Non POC wear ethnic attire and not be descrimated against but POC are being marginalised. (Im not saying that non POC should be treated badly).
If a non POC can wear braids and be complimented then why should a POC wearing braids to school be expelled or not offered a job? Its messed up in my opinion.I’m not black so I don’t have an “interpretive precedence”, but this is what I’ve learned from listening & reading on the matter:
It’s because white people don’t meet the same discrimination for it & it has no meaning to their cultural identity. While for black people they face discrimination when it is something important and not just “trendy”. It has a cultural value and serves a purpose (as a protective hairstyle).
I have a question on the matter. Is it ok for other people of colour with similar hair texture to wear it as a protective hairstyle while on the beach or on vacation? I’m middle-eastern arab with 3b curls and my hair gets extremely dry and tangled when I go swimming.People’s get bent out of shape just because. Unfortunately people don’t talk to each other, yet they want to have each class or color of people that supposedly have this or that. Yet, history doesn’t mean that 1 person hasn’t done that earlier. Who cares. If you feel confident that is nice. Hang out with positive people, and try to stand tall with a group that advocates positive items in people’s and in life, or as a business. Negative is either what a person deals with at home or at school or doesn’t hang out with a nice crowd to help out with many of things. Homework, sports, money, book worm reading, being a positive buddy for each other. Even bike riding helps positivity. Lock up the bicycle, helmets do work.
You can wear whatever you want, it's only racist people who try to claim ownership over a hairstyle who say you can't, fuck those racists... Imagine if we told black people "hey you can't straighten your hair, that's ours, or "hey you can't eat Chinese food.. that belongs to China"
Like fuck off... You don't own anything, that means braids or dreads are not property of your race bitch, all cultures are allowed to copy and immitate each other, there's no rules... If you disagree you are a racist and a thief
