It really shouldn't be a problem at all and my eyes roll so hard whenever I hear someone complain about it. There's hardly any culture, technology, fashion in the world that hasn't had an influence somewhere else in the world. Not to mention some of those things coincidentally developing separate from each other. FYI, the ancient vikings wore dreads too.
Because people are hypocritical morons who just want to feel like they are talking from the moral highground and apply power this way.
This stuff is just ridiculous. Like, do we claim certain demographics can't wear jeans? Or use cars? Or even more basic use electricity? Of course not. Because it's ridiculous.
Both my daughters wanted that look when they came to Thailand " dreads " , my god its a big procedure. No big deal at all in my opinion , and nice to take on the attire of different cultures , get some odd looks? Who cares.. That's their problem.. Its a USA thing , stare back at em and tell em mind their business , the idea that you have to " look " a certain way ludicrous to the max.
It isn't... Cultural Appropriation isn't actually a thing in fact, culture is different than ethnicity so while they often do go hand in hand, you could convert to any culture you choose in reality
Or remain void of an identifying culture
It would be like me getting offended that POC are dressing up as vikings or in our traditional clothes
Alright but how would you feel if they were trying to “act” like your people and making a complete mockery of your culture and to them it’s all just a game
Those people want people that actually join a culture, cultural appropriation is when someone that has no affiliation to a culture try’s to imitate it and it comes across as offensive
The vast majority of people who scream cultural appropriation in these kind of instances are not from the culture. They are a small but very loud group of people who always try to find more victims in order for them to be the saviors of those people. They are constantly trying to find and create victims and victim classes so that they can step in and be the night in shining armor.
As for the rest, I couldn't have said it better than @Lliam
Many Black hairstyles, braids and locks included, were deemed unprofessional and or inappropriate for certain settings for years.
That isn't necessarily the case now but that is primarily due to many people fighting to make the styles professionally, and to a degree, socially accepted.
Those who are aware of said history take offense when other ethnicities, specifically white, dawn the styles which were once shunned.
I think people often take it too far but I do understand the frustration with dreads as it was a mocked and often even banned hairstyle important to black people specifically and now it's becoming trendy for white people without much recognition of the history behind it
I don’t see it as appreciating other cultures but rather if you like how something looks on you.. if anyone is discriminating or feeling offended or try to put someone else down for how they want to style then that person should refrain from doing anything any other person does or is a hypocrite.
Style yourself how you think you look nice and don’t care what others say. It’s mostly hypocritical people who do that anyway.
I don't see any problem with it. 🤷 But these crazy sjws all seem to believe that if you're not born and brought up within a certain culture you have no right to be interested in that culture. BS I say.
You weren’t raised with culture so you’re not going to know how it feels. You will never know how it is to be a person of color. I mean we’ve been complaining about this for years. There’s obviously a problem with it.
@Icecream457 You mean like how the Black community makes up over 50% of major crime in the USA How you are allowed to make very racist statements, and avoid any sort of repercussions? How processes like Affirmative Action has historically made certain the Black community had easier access to high level Universities? ETC
that sort of privilege?
Yes, you are racist, for telling a white woman she has no culture.. because she is a white woman.
@Icecream457 So spare people of your nonsense. You literally went through the comments to find a white woman to attack told her she had no culture... and then wanna play victim when someone called you out on it
@xxvagabondman African-American prisoners who were convicted of murder are about 50 percent more likely to be innocent than other convicted murderers. Not to mention a black male is more likely to receive more time with the same crime than a white male. The justice system is beyond corrupt who knows how many innocent black men are sitting in jail.
@Icecream457 and yet, blacks make up the majority of the murder rate in the USA (over 50%)? Black on Black gun violence? routine in places like Chicago (and often not solved)
You speak about a very small minority of those arrested (and this includes Whites, Latinos, Asians.. etc)
Yet you are more than happy to ignore the large issues involved Just as BLM is more than happy to mention the 200 to 300 Blacks killed every year by police (while ignoring the 600+ Whites) and openly ignoring that MOST of those were armed?
I am not fool that there are issues in the system that influence people, especially those in minority communities that are known for far higher crime rates. None the less, you put so much emphasis in this WHILE... what? attacking a white woman randomly on GAG? pushing racism on her.. telling her that because she is white she has no culture?
@Icecream457 Yes, White men do make up the majority of arrests and crimes They also make up the majority of the population
Please learn how to handle statistics. Take a look at the rate of Black crime vs Population. especially in regards to major crimes (like Robbery and Murder) Blacks are disproportionately represented in nearly every type of crime In some of these, they represent more than 50%
@Icecream457 Actually if you paid attention to the FBI statistics you would recognize that Blacks commit more murders each year than Whites
Take a look at Table 43, of the FBI Uniform Crime Report FOR EXAMPLE in 2019 there were 7,964 Murder arrests of which 4,078 were Black and 3,650 were White
^ Then take into consideration the MANY unsolved murder cases that are notorious in Black neighborhoods.. and that Murder rate is far higher for the Black community
Yes, Blacks usually kill Blacks and Whites usually kill Whites and there's very little interracial murder (its a small portion)
However, Blacks often KILL more Blacks in a year than Whites kill Whites
and the White population is 5 times larger
If White people killed at the same rate as Blacks in 2019 there would have been 25,000 Murders in the White community
This is what i mean by understanding how statistics work
@xxvagabondman Well then your dumbass wouldn’t be saying black people make up 50% of the crimes here when they don’t lol. Actually according to the FBI stats white men lead in burglary, assaults, and violent crimes etc.
@Icecream457 First, read my actually read what I said "You mean like how the Black community makes up over 50% of major crime in the USA"
Secondly, as I stated in my previous reply in regards to lesser crimes. "Blacks are disproportionately represented in nearly every type of crime In some of these, they represent more than 50%"
a disproportionate percentage would include rates of 30%+ that would be 2x the Black population equivalent While the White rates are actually on par with population size
Thirdly, Before accusing someone of being "butthurt" maybe don't start with calling them a dumbass?
@xxvagabondman Funny thing is I never bought up murder not once. That’s one stat you found but looks like white people lead in everything else lol. Like I said every race killing each other over 80 percent of whites kill each other. Just as worst as blacks killing blacks lol.
@xxvagabondman What about the innocent people that were killed because of white terrorist? like Dylan roof. What about police brutality like with George Floyd.
@Icecream457 Well of course I brought it up. Crime is far more significant in Black communities than in White communities.
"just as worst as killing blacks"
You mean to say 13% of the population, making up over 4,000 of the murders in 2019 is just as bad as 60%+ of the population making up around 3,500 of the murders?
If you think that is equivalent you really need to go back to school and learn statistics.
@xxvagabondman I never said they were equal. I said they are just as worst lol. 80.2% of white victims were killed by white offenders. 88.5% of Black victims were killed by Blacks. Those two stats are very close lol
Because the Black Murder equivalent is 5x their population size.
Blacks often commit more murders in a year, than Whites
Even when we take a look at every other crime Comparing the Black population (13%) with their crime rate... Blacks have a rate 2x higher than their population nearly EVERY type of Crime
Whites on the other hand are for the most part either underrepresented... . OR on par with their population size
@Icecream457 This is why the BLM type narratives simply don't work. You have networks that will mischaracterize statistics FOR EXAMPLE like how you are doing attempting to compare White/White Crime with Black/Black Crime... showing that they are relatively equivalent? ATTEMPTING to pass it off as if the Black and White community are similar...
EVERY TIME I argue this type of thing... that is the immediate response and it matters very little in the Black and White Crime argument. ALL RACES... commit most of their crime against themselves (Whites against whites.. blacks against blacks.. etc) The issue is how common those crimes happen in comparison to each other.
Blacks are VERY disproportionate in the crime rate (especially in the worst types). and in many cases, things go unreported (or unsolved.. something like 75% of murders in Chicago are unsolved) MEANING, that even in comparison to the statistics I've provided.. the Black rate is likely much higher (considering it handles arrests) 75% unsolved rate.. in a city with 500 to 1,000 murders a year (most of them Black) is terrible.
It simply isn't the same in most White communities (once again, I highlight most)
@Icecream457 Just in the same way you literally start this argument with making a racist statement You 1. claim that a woman "werent raised with culture" because she is White (Extremely racist, and showing of ignorance of the influence of White culture) <-- literally these types of arguments are mixed with how white people took over and influenced much of the world? It is one of the most ridiculous concepts to every exist.. . White culture is the default culture. 2. in by doing so you attempt to shut down her voice? making arguments like "you will never know what its like to be a poc" ... just as you will never know what its like to be a White woman?
^ Yet you want to play victim and act as if she is privileged when you can attack a woman for her race... and assume there should be no repercussions?
Do you not realize how ridiculous that sounds in a modern society where YOU... have posted a question about attending University where YOU... are among the most privileged people in the world? LITERALLY living a life that MOST people in the world are incapable of living (be it freedoms of speech... freedom to practice religion or none... ability to have your voice heard.. and CURRENTLY made the most dominate one... ability to attend university... ability to choose your destiny.. the list goes on and on.. and on... and on)
@Icecream457 You seriously need some introspection study up a bit on history (I promise you BLACKS are not the only ones to suffer) .. racial structures of modern society... or compare and contrast much of the world vs the USA (indeed some nations outdo the USA in certain things) actually attempt to compare statistics.. MAYBE attempt to study marxism.. and the history of communism? (considering many of these arguments come from a marxist leaning) learn where that tends to lead. :P etc
instead of just following the nonsensical arguments of raving lunatics. where you think its totally okay to push racist statements against random white women privilege in a nutshell
My thing with this cultural appropriation nonsense is that different cultures from all around the world have been borrowing ideas and practices from each other since the dawn of time. For example tattoos originated in different ancient cultures that had little to no interactions with each other. Ancient Egyptians, ancient Chinese, and Celtic tribes all started practicing tattooing independent of each other. Also what about foods that originate from different cultures? Is it racist or appropriation to go eat at the local Mexican or Indian restaurants? As long as someone ISN'T doing something with the INTENTION of being rude or offensive there shouldn't be a problem. With that said I do not think it's appropriate to wear garments that have a traditional or religious purpose for said culture unless you want to follow the traditions or religious practices yourself.
I think it's mainly because they feel that there's no cultural incentive to dress certain ways. And since there's no cultural incentive, it's all for fashion so they might be offended especially if it's traditional clothing.
I kinda compare it to an atheist celebrating religious holidays. An atheist doesn't have the same value for the holiday that the religious person would.
there's an island off of in the pacific called Melanesia. Its the third pacific nation. the other two are Micronesia and Polynesia. Melanesia (melanesians) have brown skin and blonde hair. Like literally everyone on that island was born with blonde hair. Its natural for them, they dont carez they have afros and theyre islanders. Why should anyone care if they have braided hairs and have a different skin complexion?
If it's just one other way of 'decorating' (or presenting?) oneself - I don't see where that's ''wrong''. However - I have seen people who at the same time try to imitate or identify with someone or something that they not really are; or never CAN be. That counts not only for using other culture's items, but also for ''trans-dressing'' and such. It still does not offend me, but I find it silly in these cases.
1. Cultural appropriation is stupid 2. Most of who complain about it know little about the history of it anyways... For example, Dreads are not specifically an African cultural thing.. MANY European tribes had the same hairstyle... OR some East Asian groups did the same thing... So What? 3. Most who complain about this, and claim their culture is being "appropriated" tend to be racist themselves.
My best friend who’s white wears box braids and twist all the time now she actually asked me how I felt about it and if she does get it would it be disrespectful. I told her absolutely not. She also has lip fillers and stuff it’s on her and how confident she is I mean if she wants to who am I to be like no. Get it. I told her she’ll probably get stares sometimes but F them.
I really haven't heard of Indian or Asian saying that.. not even African or Jamaican. It's really the Americans. Everyone else sees it as appreciation unless it's done in a tasteless or offensive manner
Indians always "appreciate" when a person of different culture wears their clothes or try to speak Hindi. You're absolutely right. It's probably just American thing to take offense over this.
I don't know if that's you in that picture or not. The dreads do look cute on you. Call this a wishy-washy type of response to this, but if you want to wear dreads, go ahead. Regardless of what race you are, if you want to wear them, go ahead. It's up to you. It shouldn't be a big deal of any kind. It's your free will.
What does being white have to do with anything? Listen if white girls are sporting (dreds) and Mexican boys a Got (jerry curls) and Asians start having (mo hawks) if you happen to be one of the three I mentioned why in the fuck would you care if someone was giving you shit for it? Be like me and tell anybody who says anything about it to fuck off and mine there own bullshit.
Home > Fashion & Beauty > Questions > I’m confused. Why is it such a big deal when a white girl wants to wear dreads or something from a different culture?

You're not too bright if you don't understand cultural appropriation.
Some people just don't want to see certain people utilise the symbols and styles of their race/culture.
Think of it like this, your abuser/rapist/mugger etc coming out wearing what makes you you. You wouldn't be happy in the least.
But of course. Not everyone goes for the cultural appropriation thing.

Bunad and Wadmal are examples of clothes that are traditional to us that Tourists and foreigners like to dress up in

Alright but how would you feel if they were trying to “act” like your people and making a complete mockery of your culture and to them it’s all just a game
They do... And I don't like it, but I don't care either fools will be fools
Than that’s cultural appropriation it does exist though I will admit that some people take it too far but it definitely exists
My thing about it is that the people complaining about it are the same people who push for a multicultural world...

@xxvagabondman Her ignorant statement. She’s obviously privileged.
@Icecream457 In what way is she "privileged" ?
explain that to me
@xxvagabondman she’s white.
@Icecream457 Ah, so then you are a racist?

Yes, but we get discriminated against for having dreads and braids. And when a person has it it’s trendy.
@Icecream457 Not really, considering lots of comments in here include people who state a White woman shouldn't have it.
Not to mention discrimination tends to go around regardless
especially if you are trying to wear unprofessional wear in a professional setting.
Well for the hair it's not a big deal.
As for traditional clothes I'm not sure how I feel about it. Cause if you're like in India then wearing a sari wouldn't be too weird.
But if you're wearing it in the USA my question is why? Is it a fashion thing?
If folks in the US want to dress in cultural garb it’s not an issue to me, although some will certainly draw scrutiny from Law Enforcement.
Well I mean it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Especially when you don't come from that certain background.
