I've been doing a history project on the history of gym class and it looks like there were some pretty weird rules on what guys and girls had to wear in some schools haha.

What do you think about guys having to do it topless? Guys would you of found that uncomfortable or ok? And it was worse for the girls - what do you think about these weird outfits girls had to wear? I'm glad I never had to deal that lol.

I hated gym clothes. I was assigned gym class for first period one year and loved that because I came to school an hour later all year. 😂

The administration was unhappy and I was assigned Saturday detentions which I never appeared for either. I finally had more detentions assigned to me than days in the school year, so I was called into the office and offered, "a clean slate." I agreed, but didn't see the point since I wasn't showing up anyhow.

Lucky for me, corporal punishment wasn't allowed in my school.

Boys outfits: I mean guys are topless in some sports anyway like swimming so don't really see why it matters. probably has some benefits, teacher can see posture and helps guys build confidence, and suspect at that age girls wouldn't have been complaining 😂 so maybe a good idea

Such a good question. In all of my schools, we boys had to take our shirts off often. It was worst for most in middle school. We were either scrawny or awkward.

But, the interesting story was about the gym teacher we had in 6th and 7th grade. She was mean in general. But, she also tolerated no one not bringing gym clothes. If you forgot gym clothes, she made you do gym in your underwear. That was pretty awkward. It lasted until she made the first girl do it. It didn't happen after that.

I would've found it a bit uncomfortable tbh especially if girls in the class as well - i used to dislike co-ed swimming class in school for the same reason

Eh. It would make wrestling awkward. and I probably would have been more self-conscious about my body since I was always thin.

Otherwise, I kinda wish this were the case. I hate the heat, and I HATE wearing sweaty clothes. And even worse, RE-wearing sweaty clothes. Ours were washed, like, once per week. Some of us would have black spots where mold was growing.

I have no problems bring shirtless even as a thicc boi, but I learned recently that some school PE uniforms were re-used and re-used and re-used over and over again even in the 50s and 60s, so I can only imagine the smell.💀I’d hope I’d be allowed to bring shorts from home.

For varsity basketball team pracitce there were moments when we did "no-shirts" vs "shirts". One side had to be shirtless and the other side wore the practice jersey. Wasn't a big deal.

And there's nothing wrong with what the girls are wearing in those pictures. No worse than what girls are walking around in these days (booty shorts, crop tops, yoga pants etc).

When I was in high school, many years ago (I'm 55), we guys all had to wear the school gym uniform, which consisted of shorts and t-shirt in school colors, emblazoned with the school logo. We had to buy our own gym uniforms, which were available in the school bookstore. In comparison, we did not have to wear a school uniform, though there was a strict dress code that included a dress shirt and tie.
