Do you think school/workplace dress codes are too strict nowadays?

Teacher POV here. Dress codes exist to control & demean women and absolve men of being creepy.

I've never had what a kid was wearing effect their learning (with the exception of NO AC in my school & the classrooms near the boiler routinely hit the 80s even when vents closed). You simply can't learn shivering or melting.

That said, I would NEVER tell a female student I thought she violated the dress code for two reasons:

1) No one better tell my daughter how to dress. I'm keenly aware of how she CHOOSES to present herself to the world and MYOFB

2) The savvy student would simply reply to the teacher - any gender - with this simple phrase: "Well why were YOU looking?" and there goes a career. Its the ultimate uno reverse and indefensible.

Even in the workplace, most places are not client forward so it just doesn't matter.

I don't know if they're too strict but they should have at least a couple different outfits that these kids can wear instead of wearing the same thing everyday

I go back and forth. On the one hand I prefer the freedom of expression. On the other hand, I kind of like the idea of school uniforms to eliminate gang colors and the such.

Would it surprise you to learn that regional charter schools pool $ to buy/start their own uniform supply corps? The only losers with uniforms are the already poor. It has no effect on order & discipline at all
