Why would a guy hesitate to tell you he has a gf?

So recently I had the nerves to approach my crush after 3 semester of not ever speaking to him. He knew about about my feelings my first semester in college (would be a long story, but HE KNEW). After the 1st semester, my 2nd and 3rd semester i stopped showing signs of interest but he was always staring at me. Now this being my 4th semester, his friend called me over to tell me my crush been checking me out for quite a while. My crush shyly and smilingly deny it. His friend was quite bother telling him to stop being shy. Crush couldn't really make eye contact. Friend said we should exchange number but my crush stood there all quietly and shy. I asked him if his job doesn't permit it and he said "no, I'll tell you why." Some girl interrupts him for 1 minute. Then he says "i have a gf" and looks down at the desk without making eye contact. I just said i respect that. Why couldn't he say this from the start while his friend was trying to get us together from the start?

Ps -I'm attractive face and body wise.

He probably enjoyed looking at you and staring at you. I think if he does like you a little or have a crush on you then he wouldn't want you know because of that reason.Also it's very embarrasing to tell a cute girl that a guy is taken.That is why he put his head down in shame.If he told you sooner then you probably would had ignored him.He probably likes the attention you gave him and you probably made him feel good and his ego feel good. Even if he has a girlfriend doesn't mean things are going well.But my question is how did you know your crush knew you had feelings for him, if you guys never said a word to each other?

May be you are more attractive than his current GF and he is confused what should he do next, he din't tell you coz he din't want you to go away/stop liking him.

I was really thinking the SAME EXACT thing that he just didn't want me to stop liking him. When my crush said he had a gf, his friend was like "Tell him you don't care! Tell him!" While my crush was smiling and nodding head but avoiding eye contact. I just said "no, i respect that." crush was very gentle though. I wonder what would have happen if i said "idc" lol although that's not my character.

I gave him signal my 1st semester only and ignored him for 2 more semester and you could say I ignored him this one too (4th semester) until his friend called me over. But yeah, i know i should move on. Most I'll do is say hi and how are you, and keep it moving. Since i told him I respect his relationship, he must know no more pursuing and signs from me, and pushing to move on. Its up to him now

For man saying hi, how are you is also a green signal. Not cutting it off completely is reason enough for him to pursue you.

I don't want to completely ignore him because he was generous and i would give him the impression I'm bothered by him having a gf. I believe saying hi will show confidence and that idc much because it was just a silly crush. Maybe the how are you part, shouldn't he consider, just the hi.

You know what i also find weird. His friend called me over, but why would he if he knew my crush had a gf? Unless he found out the same day. Right after my crush said he had a gf, his friend was like "tell him you don't care!"

Something similar happened to me a few months back... the guy liked me, I could definitely tell, but he had a serious girlfriend and didn't want to break up with her. He never made a move on me cause he wasn't a dick or anything, just didn't necessarily want to lose me if he and his girl didn't work out... but by the time they broke up I had moved on. Too bad for him haha. But yea, I think that's just what guys do.
