I told him I liked him and now he is avoiding me!! help!

ok, so there was this guy that I had been talking to for a few months, and we had ssoooo much in common. I really liked him, and one day I finally got the courage to tell him l...online.(I know, stupid right?) so I did and he said he thought I was a really cool person but he didn't know me well enough to like me like that. I let him know tht I totally understood, and it was fine(even tho I was crushed inside. but I didn't want him to know that, so I pretended I was fine.) but then he started avoiding me at school, and he would just stare. if I got online to chat with people, he would get off. finally after a month of not talking to him, I was finally able to talk to him online. he only answered with one or two word answers, and said he had to go. I really like this guy, and now I just want to be his friend, but he's ignoring me and avoiding me! wut should I do? should I tell him I am over him and just want to be his friend? why is he doing this? he is the coolest guy I have ever met, and I want to at least be friends. help! :'(
