Negging is an act of emotional manipulation whereby a person makes a deliberate backhanded compliment or otherwise flirtatious remark to another person to undermine their confidence and attempt to engender in them a need for the manipulator's approval. The term was coined and prescribed by pickup artists. some examples below:
I've been negged plenty of times and the person who negged me blamed ME for being insecure when it was their constant negging that made me feel insecure in the first place.

Man, only in the internet age. 75 years ago, if you complimented a woman, she saw it as friendly and if you insulted her, she saw it as hostile (and usually slapped you and/or walked away)

Oh I've had guys try that on me a good bit. It's so obvious and never works at all. I've had guys on this site try it as well. It's just goofy.

I find it stupid and transparently obvious to most women. Not sure if it has ever been used on me, as I would jettison anyone who starts out being negative.
Never heard of the actual term but I am quite familiar with act of negging which I would otherwise associate with just emotional blackmail.
So, no one admits to ever doing it. Okay 😂
