How can I ask my boyfriend to go back to college?

My boyfriend went to college before, took a few classes, then quit. He's 21. He has a job at a grocery store and he gets paid 10 something an hour. Since he's been working there for 2-3 years, he's been promoted and I think that's great!

However, I think he needs to go back to school. He's told me he wants to go back,and I said that was fantastic, but then he back tracked and said he didn't know of his job would allow him to do that :(

I'm going to college, working on my BA in math and I just wish he'd go to college too because even though I am not all about money, I still think into the future and want my guy to be just as successful or more than me.

While your concern is well intended do not be overbearing and do not think college is the only answer. If he's willing to cooperate with you ask him the right questions. What would his dream job be and what does he like to do? See if college would or would not help him with that.

College is becoming a bigger and bigger failure these days and not giving people any jobs along with putting people in debt while giving them nothing back for their investment. I am seeing so many of my friends unemployed or making less than me while being expected to pay back all this debt to our school system and it is very sad.

You gotta make sure the degree is actually something that the job he wants would look at. I have a degree in communication and media arts and it's collecting dust. The only job that was impressed with my degree was a local cable company and all they were willing to offer me was a 12 dollar an hour call center job while expecting me to go through an absolutely ridiculous commute with no mileage reimbursement. So many people make the mistake of not setting their mind on a specific yet realistic career while making sure the degree is something a job would look at. He could end up wanting a trade school for something else instead of even be fortunate enough to land a job that has on-the-job training and not get stuck being scammed out of 100K studying nonsense that doesn't even apply to his career.

I do know that most grocery stores don't even hire full time people so he obviously is going to want something better. Just see what he wants for himself and offer help when he actually wants it.

I know that women (or men) want financial security in a relationship, and it isn't wrong that you want him to go back to college. College is not overrated, and your boyfriend would be better off spending some extra time to go back to college so that he can eventually get a better job. Better to invest in something better than to live like this and stay at around 12-16 dollars an hour for the rest of his life.

Just tell him what I told you. Just tell him that you want him to be successful, perhaps more than you. Tell him it isn't about money and tell him it is about the future. College will pay off more than this job. Tell him that going back to college should have nothing to do with whether or not his job will allow him to do that or not.

You need to keep encouraging him and offer to go with him to meet with the college or help pick his classes etc, and if he still doesn't seem serious about it, give him an ultimatum. Get his education or get a new woman. You don't want to be with a man who will be working at a grocery store forever.

If he's afraid that his job won't allow it, maybe he should take night classes or classes that don't fit in with his work schedule. Or if he doesn't have a fixed schedule at work he could talk to his superior and set one. That could encourage him to go to school.

Telling him what to do would be detrimental, especially because he already is considering it. You -could- throw out suggestions or encourage it, but telling him "you should _____" will make him feel resentful.

Why not a 2 year technical school instead? College is becoming a huge waste of money these days and it puts young people in debt they may not be able to pay. Tech schools teach skills that are in very high demand. Manufacturing companies need skilled workers desperately right now and many of those jobs pay 15 bucks to 30 bucks an hour and come with full benefits. For a fraction of the cost of college he could get a good job.

Bottom line though is if he doesn't want to go to school he won't so either accept it or dump him.

there is no reason he can't at least start takeing some classes online and start building up credits towards a final degree. Show him you found a way if he is interested. At the end of the day you will accept him as he is or you won't. You may just out grow him. You seem to already be more mature.

like everyone else is saying, make sure him going to college will actually be useful for him in the long run. as someone who is about to graduate and has literally no job prospects with the stupid degree I'm getting after busting my ass for four years, it's very disheartening knowing that all I'm getting is some debt out of it :(. if his dream career involves only having to go to a technical school or getting an associate's degree or just getting certified in some way, look into that first.
