Closed down early, bad decision?

my family owns a café that i work at, like a dog, for them. today, there was an issue with plumping and so a whole bunch of actual shit, sewage i mean, came up underneath the drain of the sinks in our kitchen. its a small kitchen but the floor near the back was covered in sludge and alike and smelt awful.
i called my step dad let him know what was up and he said to pour some bleach down there and to not use the sinks.
meaning, we can't wash dishes or sanitize them either.
i pour the bleach down the drain when it lowered a bit then it began to foam and chemicals were everywhere. the smell was strong of both chemical and sewage and i let him know this too.
i swear he said to close down early, and i did that. me and my coworker did our best to clean, but we had no access cleaning dishes and such because... well because the floor was covered in shit and we couldn't use the sinks.
by the time we finish, im light headed and a little woozy and i go outside to air out before i begin to drive home. i let my step dad know we closed down early and he was pissed.
so now im thinking of quitting lol, but thats probably just impulsive thinking.
but yea, he was pissed about the whole thing and now my mom is too.
did i do the wrong thing?

They shouldn't be mad at you, I feel you made the right decision to clean up some and close the cafe down for the remainder of the day, customers wanting to use the restrooms would most likely have sewage coming up or extreme sewage odor due
to the backup, well down at my old house, you wouldn't believe how many times
the sewer got back up and neighbors sewage was coming into ours and on our
basement floor I've put money into buying stuff to open the sewer and the money
to have a plumber come out it was ridiculous

As @OlderAndWiser said, had you attempted to continue operating under those conditions the cafe would have been shut down by the Department of Health, possibly faced heavy fine possible suspension (or loss) of it's business license. Your actions deserve praise rather than scrutiny.

They should be pissed at themselves for not handling this proactively and letting the restaurant deteriorate to this point. I can't imagine a reputable restaurant staying open under those circumstances.

im a little peeved too and stuff. why would you stay open with sewage being pumped from the drains, especially if there were customers eating there.
it's embarrassing.
and now im looking at jobs at target lol
but my parents are seriously angry at me

Suggest to them that if they disagree with your decision, that you call the inspectors at the Department of Health and ask their opinion. That will probably make them shut up quickly.

You did the right thing and that issue should be resolved before opening again. They should feel lucky that the health department isn't involved but that could change if a customer sees the mess and decides to call them.
