This question is inspired from my fathers side, how high do you like it? How high can you handle?My work did a pepper eating contest back before covid in the building, the winner got a $100 dollar gift card, runner up $50 and third place $25.
I could only make it as high as Ghost Peppers before I called it quits, the guy who won... well he passed out. Third place for myself.
I did sample Carolina, ONE EYE DROP of it and it made my mouth burn forever... even with all the dairy and other things to help. Might as well be eating acid or something. Drooling all over the place, geez... but better than the winner, he may have got a $100 dollar gift card, but he passed out and got the rest of the day off.
Sadly they won't ever be doing this again, due to him passing out.

In my family I'm the wimp only going up to Ghost pepper, we even have a jalapeno home made jelly we make. Jalapeno is just a light sweet flavor to myself.

Not particularly. I don't hit myself with chemical weapons as a form of recreation. And that's not hyperbole: police-grade pepper spray has about 3 million Scoville units; military-grade is about five million. I was hit with civilian-grade pepper spray once, during what I think was an attempted robbery (I was running for my life; I didn't stop to ask). I don't know why I'd want to repeat the experience. I'll take the odd jalepeno, but those peak at about 10-15 thousand.
One of the "popular-in-Chicago-but-unheard-of-elsewhere-foodstuffs" is giardineria, which is a pickled relish with carrots, celery, cauliflower and bell peppers in a mixture of olive oil and garlic. All good. (Come to think of it, perhaps the reason so many of these foods don't spread is that they're kept secret, for fear the rest of the country will try to steal our Italians.) But some cruel person decided the recipe was incomplete because it couldn't melt through a steel beam, and added heinously spicy pepper flakes to it- enough that you often can't tell at a glance whether it's mild enough to be enjoyable or hot enough to liquefy your internal organs.
If the government would REALLY want to do something useful, should require a Scoville rating on all salsas, etc. that are over 500.
My thing is that I like the flavor, just not a lot of the heat. We had gone to a Chili's several years ago and I informed the server of my dilemma. She nodded in understanding, and came back with Cholula Hot Sauce. I've been a convert ever since. More taste than heat. Chipotle is my favorite. I'm not about hot spicy food so... Poblano, around 1000/1500, that's as much as I can actually handle, and that's where all the food for ME... is the most tasty, without having your tongue assaulted
but the question is about how high can go so... I've actually done Habanero before (100/350k) and it was awful hell for the senses
I would never touch a Ghost one... lol, and surely would never do an "unnatural" like the Reaper
I grow hot peppers, my favorite is still Ghost, although I like the Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper. As far as tolerance is concerned, I ate a full Ghost pepper raw in a contest and survived (won the prize because you had to eat the whole pepper, not just a bite) but was sick for a couple of days. Worth only for bragging rights and won't do it again! :-)
Yeah no way I could do that, my family has a great ghost pepper salsa recipe with lots of flavor but even then a tablespoon is all I can handle, that Carolina reaper, could be chemical warfare with one eye drop doing what it did to me.
@aerissa_jade, no kidding! I still grow them. I normally dry all these and make various blended powdered/flaked pepper mixes. Also, salsas and hot sauces! We will have to swap recipes!
About 50-100k is ideal for me for regular eating, up to 300k is to enjoy something really spicy and I can take up to about a million, but with suffering. And also sorry for spamming replies to your questions, but I found some of your questions interesting.
I've grown habanero and bhut jalokia, aka ghost chilies. First off I did not like the taste of either. I got through eating them, but not without food. A bit too much for me. I now grow cayenne and Thai chilies. Living in Phoenix, they grow all year long.
Highest I ever went was part of a bet. It was the ghost pepper. Didn't hit me until about 30 seconds in... then I remember my mouth being on fire and it taking 20 minutes of flushing with water to make it tolerable.
Oh yeah, probably. The Man vs Food guy did a challenge once where he to wear surgical gloves. And another time the cook said the peppers burn through surgical gloves. That is INSANE! My cousin did a hot wings challenge once. I took one lick and my mouth was on fire for 30 minutes. They make you sign a waver. I love spicy food, but that stuff isn't good for your stomach, but it also has health benefits. I'm finally starting to get used to Jerk sauce, because I've been eating it at least once a week.
I always tell myself I'll cut down on the spicy food, but it's so irresistible
I like spicy of all kinds and I eat it on a daily basis. I have no idea the level of spiciness but I eat almost anything spicy. Both alone and together with fish meat and vegetables etc… I really really like spicy.
