Al hamdulillaah thanks to Islamic teachings I don’t drink alcohol.
In Islam it is prohibited to drink alcohol, wine, and and drink that would make you get drunk.
Allaah the almighty said in Quran:
“ (219) They ask you about wine[80] and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess [beyond needs]." Thus Allāh makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought”(Al-Baqarah)
“ (90) O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allāh], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid[282] it that you may be successful.”(Al-Maa’idah)
“ (91) Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allāh and from prayer. So will you not desist?” (Al-Maa’idah)
And the reward of submitting to that is getting better drinks in paradise:” (15) Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered,[1498] rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord... [Are its inhabitants] like those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?“(Muhammad).
And from my point and personal point of view, there’s really nothing good from making my brain out of control and getting it to function without realizing what’s going on. I prefer to always be aware of everything around me and everything I do, because I believe everyone should take responsibility of what they’re doing, and when someone is drunk they try to make excuses that they do whatever they do without noticing.
Also, if you check in society how many crimes and domestic violence comes after people getting drunk, girls being raped, girls being drugged and used sexually and treated so badly, men being used sexually too and treated very badly…. A lot of problems in society comes from drinking but unfortunately people love more to run away from responsibility and to blame things or others, and at the end innocent people are always the victims either from drunk people or because they got drunk.00 Reply

I actually only drink alcohol maybe 10 times a year.
I don't care that much for beer, so I'm not one to crack one open when I'm relaxing. If anything, I might enjoy a good stout or porter on tap once in a while.
I rarely open a bottle of wine at home because my wife and will rarely finish it before it goes bad.
I really enjoy a decent red wine. My wife and I used to go to wine tasting events twice a year and stock on some good varieties so that we'd have something to take to parties as good guests or use as gifts. And of course, we would open some at home on occasion.
I'll have a glass of wine or two at times when my wife and I go out to dinner.
I drink at some social events.
I enjoy various mixed drinks (gin, rum or tequila)
Brandy, port, good dessert wines, and some liqueurs can be tasty treats.
Sometimes I get a pleasant buzz but I don't drink for the express purpose to get drunk. That's something when I was underage and thought the entire purpose of alcohol was to get wasted.
On rare occasions, I let my hair down and get drunk. Like when my wife and I used to go to karaoke parties at a friend's house a couple times a year. Another time, we went to a Luau in Hawaii where they had the best Mai Tais. I'm a happy drunk. I love everyone and everything. But I'm a lightweight and start not feeling well after a few hours, so I've learned my limits.
I'm not a prude about drinking but I don't like drunks. And I couldn't care less if a person never drinks alcohol. It's their choice.00 Reply

One day, my husband decided he'd stop drinking completely because our oldest was starting high school, so naturally we both stopped (I think it had already been a year since I had alcohol).
Now it's just been so long that I'm too scared to drink. 🤦
As for other people drinking, I don't mind. I'll mix you a drink in my kitchen if you like. I don't care for drunks though.02 Reply- +1 y

@Alwayreckles93 I wish! 😂
I used to socially drink a lot in my 20's up until '18 when I broke my ankle at a TLC concert. I always liked the summer time to go to concerts and festivals and get wasted. In my 20's it was bar/club hopping and house parties. I am happy I stopped though bc I am also married to an alcoholic and he will drink by himself, alone in the garage just watching YouTube videos. That's not fun. It's not healthy either, but I can't point the finger at that bc I've been smoking since I was a teenager. Lungs vs liver? Heart vs pancreas? Who knows..

Why do I drink? If Im being honest , its because Im addicted , people will say " social " and " I never drink alone " or " just at weddings / night clubs " , you can have whatever reason you like , but in honesty its a highly addictive , problem causing drug , I've just done my yearly medical , and my liver is great , which is kind of suprising cutting down made a massive difference , I dont drink beer , and I actually dont do it for any social reason. I do like white wine on the riverbank with nice company , but truth is its an addiction , and the body yearns it after all these years.
So , I plan on reducing further , but even writing this ( its 4.35 ) I've thought about it , and body is saying " Ohh a Gin would be nice " , well that will not happen till 7 pm , and on occasion 8pm.
The interesting thing , when I worked in the strip club , people all around me would be blind drunk , I would never drink , till the place was closed then maybe one wine ( never 2 ) drive home and sleep , that would be 4 am , and Id sleep till 10 am , would never drink in day , then go do it again , so despite being surrounded by alcohol , Id drink very little , I always wanted to be sober if someone was thrown out or the like.
Is there ever really a viable reason for drinking? Plus in Australia , what USA calls DUI , is very very very strict , with a massive chance of being caught. Id test myself on our calibrated DUI test in the club , and one wine over an hour Id be 0.2 , so legal.
I have a friend who has 7 separate 0.5 convictions , very fortunate to have avoided jail.
So although the people close to me know what I do , for the outside world ( except Thai doctor ) its a bit of a secret.00 Reply
Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yI don't drink often - maybe a few times a year, on special occasions - when I usually have some backup plan - I'm staying over, I live nearby, so I can walk, or I eat before and after, and I don't get behind the wheel until the effects have worn off a bit... etc.
Usually, I don't like the taste of a lot of alcoholic beverages. The alcohol is REALLY strong for me. And if it isn't, the drink itself seems stronger than the alcohol, and I end up not liking it because it's usually too sugary/chocolaty.
I don't often look down on someone has has a beer every day, or drinks socially, as long as they're not pissed drunk out of their minds all the time. If you're wasted out of your mind and try to get behind the wheel, If you're wasted at a kid's party, or embarrassing coworkers (and yourself) at a work party, that's a bit pathetic... if you're encouraging a five year old to drink a beer because it will be sooooo funny to see them drunk, I will have a full on issue about all those things - but otherwise, if you can kinda control yourself, it's not my business, and I don't look down on you for an occasional beer or wine or something.
The strange thing is how many people get on my case about not drinking much - not their business. Like they take it as a personal insult... I will sometimes get "fake" drinks just to get people to leave me alone, or I'll carry around a beer bottle and periodically just pour it out when no one's looking. Otherwise, I get harassed by multiple people at every party I go to that I'm not drinking, so while it's stupid, I play the game from time to time, because it's a bigger issue if I choose not to.00 ReplyHonestly I drank since I was 16 till i was 27. I have 16 months of humbling sobriety because I had no control over my drinking and essentially ruined my life. But I have a great love for alcohol. I hold no grudges towards it and admire people who can drink socially and not need to pick up every day. Even for functional alcoholics. I just wish there was more great tasting nonalcoholic drinks. I still very much love the bar vibe and go every once in a while, still very much sober. It's definitely a great social thing, and that doesn't change just because I have a drinking disorder. So far there are 3 non-a's that I enjoy, Heineken and Budweiser Zero, and the Lagunitas IPNA. Where there's a will, there's a way lol

+1 yNo. Partly because I just don't like the taste of it, partly because I've spent a great deal of my life with a bunch of drunks and see how they are and don't want to be that way, partly because I could never afford it if I DID get into it and partly because, the one time I DID drink a little (a dozen or so shots of Schnapps over a several month period because, with an ice cube in it, it actually tasted pretty good), I noticed I was getting forgetful so, I never drank again, except for half a DROP of 100 proof vodka just to see what it tasted like.
I don't have a problem with people that do drink unless they get so shit-faced they become a major problem or it becomes their diet and it eventually kills them. We used to have a close family friend that was like that and he died about 40 years ago when he was in his 40's. He was taking a bath one afternoon and his liver gave up the ghost and he died in the tub!00 Reply
+1 yYes, I drink. Most people in Japan drink. That includes all my friends and family along with my wife. I think people who don't drink are very wise. I'm hoping to become like them one day. They're not so fun to be around though if we're getting tipsy and laughing and they're totally sober.

@whereismyjohnny I was trying the reverse sometimes drinking coffee at a home party while my friends got alcohol. It's a weird feeling being the only one sober, and half the time even though I'd say I won't drink that night, I'd cave into temptation after seeing everyone laughing and not feeling the mood so well. :-D

Before COVID though, I was strictly a social drinker. I'd go overboard with my friends sometimes but I never drank alone. Then after COVID lockdown, I didn't get to see my friends often so I tried having a few beers at home, then ended up drinking whiskey, and sometimes to point of even being hungover the next day. So I'm trying to at least tone that down. Antisocial drinking is at least no fun at all, and I've come to grow dependent on it whenever I feel bored to be entertained.

Omg, the last birthday party was so weird since I was one among the two being sober. It was amusing because I saw some people drunk for the first time, and they are completely opposite people than when they are sober 😂 one was laying down on the floor talking shit and laughing uncontrollably while another one kept crying and eventually she fell asleep while sitting 😅
Well, I think it's positive that you are aware of it and are trying to change it. 😊
Yeah, I understand social drinking and people having a drink to get loose. My problem is that I'm a very shy and reserved person around new people or the ones in whose presence I don't feel comfortable, so it takes a lot for me to get out of my shell 😒 It kinda sucks because I always dance around and sing when I'm alone and I'm pretty goofy person around people close to me.
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI used to drink a lot when I was 20-24. I stopped drinking (not quit) if I do drink it would be occasional and only 1 or 2 beers. I've embarrassed myself too many times blacking out and doing stupid things or saying hurtful things to loved ones. It sucks waking up next day not knowing what I did and feeling guilty when my family didn't was mad at me. Also horrible having hangovers. I just learned to be careful if I drink. My problem back then I wanted to beat everyone drinking fast when im petite

+1 yI was 30 years old before I had my first drink of alcohol, and I hated it. But I kept going out with friends and kept sipping on beers and gagging in between until finally undeveloped The taste for beer. Then vodka and the next thing you know I'm an alcoholic. Several years of battling that I just dropped it all like a stone and stop drinking which was very painful in a lot of ways. So now I'm a non-drinker. I don't judge anyone for the choices that they make because even the strongest mind can be swept up by an addiction of some sort. No one is immune to addiction.
00 ReplyI only drink once or twice a year - on my best friend's birthday and on New Year.
I used to drink more often but when I was 18 I got so drunk that I barely survived and ever since my stomach rebelled the moment I even smelled alcohol. Nowadays it doesn't do that anymore but I still can't stand the smell of the most of the alcoholic beverages, except for red wine. So nowadays I only drink once or twice a year and only red wine. 1 bottle tops.
The funny thing is that even 20 years later I still have almost no memories of that moment. I only remember a very beautiful blonde girl helping me get in a cab to go home but everyone from that group said they never saw any girls and that she must have been a figment of my drunk imagination.00 Reply

+1 yI don't drink. The reason is I simply just don't have a need for it, and neither find it appealing, I guess.
I used to drink a few years ago, but not regularly. I'd have a drink on birthdays and some family gatherings, and I would drink Somersby sometimes during the Summer. Now, I don't consume it at all.
As for what I think of people who drink, I don't see a problem with it as long as it's normal and doesn't border with alcoholism.10 ReplyI drink but very little. Sometime I like to have a drink with dinner. That about it.. I used to party back in highschool but I outgrew that a long time ago. As long as you're responsible with alcohol I don't see anything wrong with it. if it becomes a out of hand problem for someone then that's when I start showing concern.
10 ReplyWhen I was about 20, I drank much more, the hard stuff, sometimes getting very drunk, but it was more for just trying to grow up and fit in with people my age. I drink very little now, maybe a wine cooler or a beer every few months. I don’t have a problem with people who drink, unless they get mean or reckless. Anyone who doesn’t drink at all is okay with me. It shows they have a lot of inner control and discipline.
00 ReplyI never developed the taste for alcohol. Just like I never developed the taste for cigarettes. Plus, alcohol is expensive!
I have friends that drink a lot and I never liked their behavior when they had too much. I don't see anything attractive about getting a DUI or hugging the toilet seat and throwing up.

I were raised religious it forbid it, from what I understood and despite not believing in it anymore, it's still not something that appeals to me, especially given that I've been working out for years too, so less reason for it.
Hearing about it being bad for you and making you act a certain way or just getting drunk doesn't make it sound particularly appealing to me, nor is it exactly cheap.00 Reply
