Never had one. Gooseberries are not common in the USA. At one time, they were banned because they contribute to a disease that kills trees. The nationwide ban no longer applies but some states like Maine still have restrictions on them.
I have some bushes in garden but 80% are eaten by birds. Ripe they have similar taste to kiwifruit but more intense. Never have seen gooseberries in big supermarket chains, I guess it's an exclusive garden fruit.

To be Cooked perfectly in a sugar free pie if Doctor showed me too much sweets = likelyhood of cancer recurring. So essentially rarely if ever EAT Sweets
When they're properly ripe, they're delicious. Squeeze until it pops, then suck out the sweet seedy goodness from the middle. We had bushes in the garden.
We used to have 6-10 bushes in the garden of the house I grew up in that gave us 20lb of Gooseberries a year, I've no Idea if they're still there as I had to move out of that house when my father died.
