I slice mine with a CNC water jet. The bun gets a little soggy and the sand cutting agent in the water makes it a little gritty, but it gets the job done. 😋
But seriously. lol...
I can eat it either way, but when I have to cut the bun myself I prefer it sliced through the top. When eating a hot dog I always hold it with the sliced part facing up (like a normal person), so when it's sliced through the top I get an even texture on each side with each bite.
For instance, not every type of bun is soft and some have a denser crust where it is browned from baking. So if you slice it through the side and hold it with the slice upward (again, like a normal person), the denser crust is on one side and the softer bottom part is on the other side, so it's not a consistent texture and bite from side to side. But when it's sliced through the top it's equal on both sides.
Don't get me going on the minutia of hot dog bun-ology. 😂

Every hot dog bun I ever had was already sliced through the side. I've never seen any that were sliced vertically, and I've never seen any that you have to slice yourself.
I wouldn't mind either way, though. The only thing that matters is a hot wiener between two soft, succulent buns.
Buy them pre cut. Then you get rid of this first world problem.

I tend to have them as Hot Dogs “En Baguette”.
Basically a big hot dog (ones in those large jars in Tescos etc).
I chop them off and core out the middle.
then I push in the sauces and onions.
next the hot dog (or brattwurst) and basically move it in and out to get it really covered in sauce.
crunchy, moist and none of those horrible hot dog rolls which are often dry as fuck. There's this hotdogs here in Lisbon that are amazinggg what makes them special is the buns, super soft and other than that hard to describe xD
We they're delicious and while they are cut from the side, they're served vertically (if that makes sense)I relish plain hot dog, no bun intended.
The standard cheap ones are precut horizontal, and the more premium ones are either sliced vertically or are uncut, and are usually best cut vertically.
I guess in England there are hot dog rolls that are more like sub rolls. In the US the hot dog rolls are already split horizontally at the top.
Really good question though. If I ever make it to England I will know what to expect. It depends on the bun, some work better sliced along the top and some along the side.
I prefer the side ones as you can usually get a couple of sausages and plenty of onions with enough bread to keep it all secure. Our buns are already cut when we buy them, they're cut along the side
I never have to slice a hotdog bun as they already come pre-split.
I get mine presided.
Brat buns I cut them like in B.The ones that are pre-sliced. That's just an extra unnecessary step as far as I'm concerned.
I dunno but the ones I buy are pre-cut. besides the dogs I like are between my buns
Ram a wooden spoon into one end, and rip it open.
The buns I've tried all come pre-slit.
The ones I buy are pretty sliced horizontal.
Duh, 90% come pre sliced
At the base of course
Right down the middle
They come sliced...
Either way is tasty
