I eat wild for a few reasons.
1. Farmed salmon uses wrasse captured from other areas to remove parasites. In theory it's good for the salmon but causes environmental problems in other parts of the country
2. Welfare concerns. Some fish are happy to sit in pools, but many species have a need to roam and hunt. You're restricting their natural behaviour and that's cruel. If it doesn't naturally live in small spaces then it shouldn't be farmed.
3. Their diet is questionable. Many fish pellets contain are made from faeces. Also a lot of wild small fish are targeted to be ground up, this can have ecological knock on effects. Plummeting Sand eel numbers are one of the reasons cod numbers have declined.
4. The fat to meat ratio is too high.
5. It encourages poaching. Chefs know wild fish tastes better but is more expensive. They want wild taste at farmed prices. They'll often turn a blind eye to where their fish comes from.
Not all wild fish should be eaten. In the UK the common skate was pretty much fished to near extinction, spurdog numbers are a fraction of their glory days. Cod and bass are near the point of collapse.
